Nancy Pelosi held back tears as she talked about being woken up by a knock on her door as Capitol Police went to tell her her husband was attacked at his San Francisco home.
“I’m very scared,” the speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives said in an interview with CNN.
“I was thinking about my kids, my grandsons. I never thought it would be Paul.”
The Democratic leader went public with the attack on the eve of the U.S. midterm elections — as her party grapples with Republican enthusiasm for maintaining control of Congress, while threats of violence against politicians and threats against the U.S. Election concerns are mounting.
Mrs. Pelosi’s husband, Paul, was hit with a hammer by an intruder who authorities said broke into their home and was looking for speakers before hitting the 82-year-old at least in the head .
The intruder allegedly told police he wanted to talk to Mrs. Pelosi and used “breaking her kneecap” as a lesson for other Democrats.
Mr. Pelosi suffered a fractured skull and other injuries in what authorities said was a deliberate political attack.
Mrs. Pelosi said she had just returned from San Francisco and was sleeping in her Washington apartment when there was a “bang, bang, bang, bang, bang” on her door. October 28th around 5:00am.
“We don’t even know where he is or what his condition is,” Mrs. Pelosi said in an excerpt of the interview scheduled to air later Monday.
“We only know that someone in our home attacked him.”
David DePape, 42, is being held without bail in San Francisco after he pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and other charges. He also faces federal charges of attempting to kidnap an elected official.
Authorities said the fringe activist who followed the conspiracy theory broke into Pelosi’s home, woke Mr. Pelosi and asked to speak to “Nancy.”
When Mr Pelosi told the intruder his wife was not around, DePape allegedly said he would wait.
After Mr Pelosi called 911, police arrived and saw two men struggling with a hammer before DePape allegedly shot Mr Pelosi with the weapon.
DePape allegedly later told police he wanted to kidnap the speaker and threatened to hurt her “to show other MPs that action has consequences”.
The stark narrative presented by authorities in court filings in the case contrasts with the jokes and innuendo about Pelosis that conservatives and some Republican officials circulated in the aftermath of the attack.
Mrs. Pelosi has said little since her husband was attacked, cutting her campaign short, but she spoke to grassroots activists in a virtual phone call after Mr. Pelosi was discharged from the hospital late last week. .
“People said to me, ‘What can I do to make you feel better?’ I said: ‘Vote!'” Mrs. Pelosi told those people on the phone.
Her voice is sometimes raspy as she talks about her husband’s recovery: “It’s going to be a long process.”
