Nepal asks UAE to raise minimum wage for Nepali migrant workers

Kathmandu, June 13: Nepal and the UAE will hold talks to decide whether to renew the labor agreement between the two countries. The Nepal-UAE Labor Joint Working Council (JWC) meeting is scheduled for Wednesday in Chandragiri, Kathmandu. The official UAE team has arrived in Nepal for the meeting.

At the meeting, Nepal will propose to renew the labor agreement with the UAE by raising the minimum wage that Nepalese workers receive in the UAE. According to sources in the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security, Nepal will make concrete proposals on reforming some legal provisions to make them worker-friendly, integrating workers returning from the UAE, and assisting development. workers’ skills. The UAE is also preparing various proposals to ensure social security for workers.

The UAE has this issue on its agenda, including the need to facilitate the entry of UAE domestic workers.

On June 14, 2019, Nepal and the UAE signed a labor agreement.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) stipulates that in the event of an occupational accident or disease, the employer shall bear the cost of treatment and pay gratuity at a rate of 21 for a service period of up to five years. Years of service and days beyond that period are calculated as 30 days per year.
