On March 31, Netflix released “Murder Mystery 2,” the sequel to its 2019 hit comedy.The long-awaited Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler movie soar Topping Netflix’s worldwide English-language film list in the first week of April, it also lifted its prequel from Netflix’s graveyard to No. 2 in its category.
The film is set four years after the first film. Audrey (Aniston) and Nick Spitz (Sandler) now run a private detective agency and find themselves investigating the kidnapping of their billionaire friend Maharajah (Adele Akhtar) ), who was planning to marry French model Claudette Joubert (Melanie Laurent).
The movie’s mystery feels secondary to Aniston and Sandler’s scene-stealing comic banter and on-screen chemistry. Audrey and Nick fit together like a perfect jigsaw puzzle. The mix of Audrey’s responsible and methodical attitude with Nick’s clumsy and cheese-obsessed demeanor is sure to make viewers laugh. While some of the film’s action sequences may seem awkward on paper, Aniston and Sandler’s comedic timing is spot on to help viewers forget the absurdity of the situation.
But the focus on Aniston and Sandler’s relationship doesn’t quite make up for the film’s surface plot. To keep viewers engaged, the movie employs constant plot twists, from intense character reveals to out-of-pocket car explosions. But screenwriter James Vanderbilt can be pleased that he has indeed created an enjoyable film.
Due to the film’s fast-paced plot twists, many interesting characters rarely make it to the screen, and character development is lacking. The Countess Segou (Jodie Turner-Smith) brings to mind a mean Blair Waldorf and adds a unique vibrancy to the mix. Inspector de la Croix (Dany Boon) feels like the prototype of the “Wild Wild” series. Audiences may wish for more from these two characters.
The film also paints an accurate and entertaining portrait of an Indian wedding – although the elephant in the small wedding tent is a bit out of place.
The wedding presented a perfect opportunity for costume designer Debra McGuire to highlight Indian designers. An ivory lehenga by Manish Malhotra for Aniston was a perfect choice.during an interview fashion indiaMcGuire said, “I lean towards something more traditional, I think it will be more respectful and appropriate to the way the scene is written.” Was the wedding costume designed by Malhotra or dad doesn’t preachThey demonstrate an understanding of what to wear to a wedding in modern India.
No Indian wedding is complete without Bollywood music. The Avinash-Vishwajeet duo composed “King Dee Wedding” for the film, a song that fits perfectly with the industry hits. The movie also features songs like “Et moi, et moi, et moi” by Jacques Dutronc and “Bang Bang” by Sheila, perfectly matching every scene they’re in.
The film’s off-camera artists also deserve recognition. Cinematographer Bojan Bazelli perfectly captures the streets of Paris, while art director Perry Andelin Blake crafts most of the film’s frames, including one featuring a replica of the Eiffel Tower that is believable.
Set designers Niamh Coulter and Jeanette Scott added a curated collection of eclectic props to the sets to make them appear more realistic. “The villa (in the movie) was built in a convention center,” Scott explained in a message to the Herald. “It would have been very luxurious.”
Murder Mystery 2 is far from a perfect movie, but perfection was never its goal. The film’s elements of comedy and surprise make this a great Friday night watch to unwind after a stressful week. Now viewers will just have to wait to see if Netflix decides to add a third installment to the franchise, although it will certainly be interesting to see Aniston and Sandler share screen space one last time.
