New exhibition of rare art and culture on the occasion of the Louvre’s 5th anniversary

United Arab Emirates – The Louvre Abu Dhabi Museum said in a statement that it has hosted more than 3.2 million people in the five years since it officially opened to the public on November 11, 2017.

The Louvre Abu Dhabi was created by an agreement between the governments of Abu Dhabi and France, designed by Jean Nouvel, and is located on Saadiyat Island. In just five years, it has become a leading global cultural institution and has become one of Abu Dhabi’s most popular destinations, attracting both the local community and international tourists.

The museum will celebrate its fifth anniversary under the theme “The Great Story Continues”, which will include a range of new artworks, cultural events, educational events and entertainment.

“The fifth anniversary milestone of Louvre Abu Dhabi marks the museum’s contribution to the cultural transformation of the UAE, enriching lives by building cultural connections and curating our shared human story. The Louvre Abu Dhabi is located in the heart of the Saadiyat Cultural District. A special location, this cultural district is rapidly developing into a major destination for art, history and culture. We are sharing the best of Abu Dhabi with the world and we invite all to celebrate with us,” said Louvre Abu Dhabi Chairman Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak said.

A series of anniversary events

To mark the anniversary, the gallery has installed a series of new acquisitions and loans from around the world. The highlight is the arrival of Leonardo da Vinci’s famous masterpiece, Saint John the Baptist, the first in a series of four major loans at the Louvre. Representing contemporary work, 12 mirrors from Italian artist Michelangelo Pistoletto’s “Mirror Paintings” series will be on view until February 2023.

Visitors can visit two main exhibitions: “Impressionism: A Pathway to Modernity” (until 5 February 2023), the largest ever display of Impressionist art in the region, and the second edition of the Louvre Abu Dhabi Art Exhibition and Richard Mille Art Prize (November 18-February 19, 2023).

The Louvre Abu Dhabi Festival will feature concerts by three renowned artists: Iraqi singer and composer Majid Al-Muhandis on Friday, and award-winning singer and global superstar John Legend on Saturday, Legendary Egyptian pianist and composer Omar Khairat will perform on Sunday.

Manuel Rabat, director of Louvre Abu Dhabi, stressed that the anniversary season is gearing up to be the most exciting year yet.

“Creating memorable experiences for the community has always been an integral part of our work, and we are delighted to provide our visitors with many opportunities to learn, explore and celebrate moments of cultural connection. We remain committed to building an understanding of our shared humanity, ensuring that every Every visitor leaves inspired, mindful and connected. Our shared grand story is just beginning, and we look forward to the bright future to follow.”

Over the years, this cultural landmark has collaborated with more than 30 regional, French and international museums and institutions. It collaborated with French and regional museums on 16 exhibitions and opened the region’s first research laboratory of its kind.

Educational programs include school and university guided tours, workshops and programs attracting more than 120,000 students, as well as a public program of annual masterclasses and events for families and adults. Louvre Abu Dhabi welcomed more than 1,300 seniors and nearly 1,000 determined, orphans and young people to reintegrate into the community through special events designed to engage all segments of Emirati society. The museum has been developing the next generation of UAE museum professionals by providing employment opportunities and high standard training in the cultural sector.
