A new report called “Hydrogen: From Hype to Reality” calls for the importance of developing a comprehensive strategy to produce, store and use hydrogen energy.
It pointed out that as the world strives to achieve net zero emissions, hydrogen is essential for decarbonizing industries that are difficult to reduce emissions such as steel, cement, aviation and shipping.
The report was launched by the Dubai Future Foundation (DFF) in cooperation with the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MoCCAE), and the Dubai Water and Power Authority (DEWA).
The Minister of Energy and Infrastructure Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei said at the release of the report: “The UAE is one of the leaders in the field of renewable and clean energy and one of the pioneers in adopting innovative methods to improve energy efficiency. The energy sector. To achieve these priorities. The country has launched the UAE’s 2050 Energy Strategy, which aims to increase the share of renewable and clean energy in the energy structure to strike a balance between economic needs and environmental goals.
“Hydrogen energy is one of the solutions that support sustainable development. In addition to geothermal energy and organic energy, it can also be produced from existing traditional resources (such as oil and natural gas) or renewable resources (including solar and wind energy). Hydrogen production from fossil fuels is currently the most cost-competitive in our region, at US$1.5 per kilogram.”
He pointed out: “The UAE has made great strides in clean energy in record time, thanks to its progressive legislation that keeps pace with the latest developments, responds to the most pressing challenges, and sets ambitious goals for the future.”
Mariam Hareb Almheiri, Minister of State for Food Security, said: “The deployment of clean energy solutions is a key pillar of global climate action because it greatly helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and accelerate the path to a net-zero future. It’s impressive. The technological advancement of China has helped us find new clean energy sources, among which hydrogen is the most cutting-edge.
“By launching green hydrogen production and use plans and projects, the UAE is leading the international competition to use clean hydrogen as the fuel of the future.”
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, CEO of DEWA, praised the collaboration with DFF to publish the report, and pointed out that green hydrogen represents one of the pillars of a sustainable future, which depends on accelerating the transition to carbon And transition to support the green economy.
He said: “The production of green hydrogen is part of DEWA’s efforts to support Dubai’s clean energy strategy 2050, which aims to provide 75% of Dubai’s total power generation through clean energy by 2050. The green hydrogen project has been implemented in cooperation between the two parties. DEWA, Expo 2020 Dubai and Siemens Energy at DEWA’s R&D center in the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park is the first facility in the Middle East and North Africa to use solar energy to produce hydrogen. The plant aims to promote hydrogen Future applications and test platforms for different purposes. This project will help pave the way for a clean energy-based economy.”
DFF CEO Khalfan Belhoul pointed out that the release of the report shows that DFF is keen to work with all government and private sector entities to shape the future of the UAE’s energy sector, in addition to identifying related challenges and opportunities, and supporting the country’s energy development. Progress has been made in the areas of technology, innovation and economic diversification.
The report pointed out that the UAE can not only become a leading hydrogen economy in the region, but also a major hydrogen exporter. It is strongly recommended that Dubai’s policymakers implement a “producer and hub” export sector development strategy, which is possible under high or medium hydrogen demand at home and abroad. By 2050, this strategy can increase Dubai’s GDP by Dh32 billion per year, create more than 120,000 jobs and offset the equivalent of 84 days of carbon dioxide emissions in the UAE’s annual crude oil production.
