Abu Dhabi Joint Committee on Traffic Safety freed A comprehensive plan to make roads safer in light of the increased traffic on Abu Dhabi’s roads. The program addresses the increase in two-wheeler traffic and related accidents as businesses deploy motorcycle delivery drivers.
Under the scheme, delivery motorcycles are prohibited from using the fast lane and can only use the right lane on roads with a speed limit of 100 km/h and above. On three-lane and four-lane roads with a speed limit above 100km/h, only two tracks on the right are allowed, and on five-lane roads, three tracks on the right are allowed.
The committee is chaired by the Ministry of Municipalities and Transport, including the Integrated Transport Centre, Abu Dhabi Police General Command and the Department of Health, which launched a comprehensive plan to enhance traffic safety for delivery motorcyclists.

Controlling traffic in Abu Dhabi
The committee noted that the decision is in line with a framework aimed at regulating road traffic flow and maintaining a high level of safety for all road users by limiting dangerous driving accidents. This includes speeding – especially on busy roads and motorways – and disregarding traffic, road signs and signals. Other than driving on the wrong side of the road, changing lanes suddenly, and failing to use turn signals properly.
The council has developed an initiative to create partnerships with companies operating in the delivery sector by fine-tuning qualifications, education levels and providing ongoing training for drivers and motorcyclists working in the sector.
The plan also includes the establishment of designated parking spaces for delivery bikes, with more than 2,800 in Abu Dhabi and 200 in Al Ain.
Several initiatives will also be rolled out over the summer, aimed at improving the quality of life of delivery bike drivers and relieving the heat by providing them with permanent rest stops at carefully selected locations, which will be rolled out in Abu Dhabi as the first phase .
ITC also provided parking permits for (6) buses designated as temporary rest stops for delivery drivers in Abu Dhabi, Khalifa, Mohamed bin Zayed, Shahbout and Shahma areas certificate.
The council said the initiative followed several local studies that looked at the causes of crashes among drivers and cyclists working in the delivery sector.
The program will initiate a comprehensive high-quality program being applied at different stages, based on best practice, combined with a review of current assessment and training standards for drivers applying for a professional license in Abu Dhabi.
In recent news, Abu Dhabi has introduced new speed limits to regulate traffic on some of its major roads.
