North Korea will convene a parliament because of pressure from economic difficulties | Wall Street Journal Political News

The Rubber Stamp Supreme People’s Conference will meet on September 28 to discuss economic policies and other issues in the crisis.

According to official media reports, North Korea’s Supreme People’s Assembly (SPA) will meet next month to discuss economic policies and other issues as the country faces a growing economic crisis.

According to the KCNA report on Thursday, the agenda of the September 28 meeting was to “revise and supplement” the national economic plan and laws related to urban and rural development, education, and recycling.

The North Korean parliament rarely meets, and is usually responsible for approving decisions on issues such as the governance structure and budget created by the country’s powerful Workers’ Party, which has an overwhelming majority of its members.

KCNA stated that the decision to convene the parliament was made at the plenary meeting of the SPA Standing Committee on Tuesday.

The Bank of Korea estimates that North Korea’s economy will suffer its biggest contraction in 23 years in 2020 due to continued UN sanctions, COVID-19 blockade measures and severe weather.

North Korea has not confirmed any cases of COVID-19, but it has closed its borders and adopted strict precautionary measures, treating the pandemic as a matter of national survival.

In June, leader Kim Jong Un stated that the country is facing a “tense” food situation, citing the pandemic and last year’s typhoon.

Another round of destructive storms occurred this summer, raising concerns that the harvest might be affected.

Earlier this year, Kim said that the country’s current economic difficulties are similar to those in the 1990s, when North Korea was facing extreme poverty and hunger, and he urged citizens to prepare for more difficult battles.

According to the South Korean Yonhap News Agency, the parliamentary meeting was also held after the country’s reorganization of senior party officials, including the vice chairman of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party Lee Pingzhe, who was reportedly removed from office.

The parliament is regarded as the highest authority under the Constitution, but it is regarded as a rubber stamp by the ruling party.

Yonhap News Agency pointed out that it usually holds a plenary meeting in March or April to deal with the budget and cabinet reorganization.

The upcoming conference in late September will be the second such event the following year A meeting was held in January.
