Abu Dhabi, UAE: The Department of Arts and Humanities of New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) will host open studios – An event showing the work in progress of ten students from the University’s Master of Arts and Media Arts (MFA) program and five students from VisArt Capstone.

The public event, taking place at the Arts Center on November 18, will showcase art forms ranging from painting, sculpture, printmaking, fiber art to video, photography and mixed media. These works address a wide range of themes, including postcolonialism, mysticism, nature and the cosmos, fragility, patterns of human behavior, time and degradation, language and identity, childhood memories, utopia, and human intimacy with objects.

Tina Sherwell, director of the MFA program and visiting associate professor of art and art history at NYU, said: “The public rarely has the opportunity to experience the process behind the making of artwork. To that end, we are very pleased to welcome our visitors and give them the opportunity to work in our Talk to artists as they show their work in progress.”

NYUAD’s MFA is a two-year degree in Visual Arts. It is designed as a full-time, interdisciplinary studio art program at the crossroads of artistic practice and theory, tradition and change. The program immerses students in contemporary research and artistic practice while preparing them to become profound thinkers and artistic innovators. The course emphasizes artistic experimentation in the context of theoretical, cultural, and historical studies. Its multidisciplinary curriculum links subject skills and different bodies of knowledge.

The UAE’s cultural heritage and heritage, as well as its emerging status as a global arts hub, make field study an essential part of the MFA curriculum. In the context of postgraduate study, the intensification and depth of field study practice helps to build new artistic communities and connections from the UAE outward to the world. This unique mix of cultures demonstrates the complexities addressed by the entire MFA program, which positions itself at the crossroads of global knowledge and practice.

Throughout the programme, students will have access to local stakeholders and institutions including Warehouse 421, Art Abu Dhabi, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, Bagir Art Foundation, Sharjah Art Foundation, Art Jameel and Al Serkal Avenue.
