NYU Abu Dhabi welcomes world-renowned lecturers for January 2023 semester

ABU DHABI: New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) has announced an impressive array of lecturers and courses for its January 2023 semester (J-Term), including former British Prime Minister David Cameron and Italian Former Prime Minister Matteo Renzi Senator.

NYUAD offers J-Term courses to undergraduates at many locations around the world. Classes in the January term are taught by renowned academics, authors, artists, journalists and policy analysts taught only in the J term, as well as distinguished professors from NYU, NYU and other leading universities. Students study a course full-time for approximately three weeks. These courses are designed as immersive experiences that sharpen students’ intellectual focus, go beyond the classroom to incorporate experiential learning, and are often site-specific, connecting students to the place they study.

The January 2023 program marks the first J-Term since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, heralding a return to travel and a global experience for the 1,200 NYU students taking J-Term classes this year. Students can choose from 77 courses on offer, covering topics as diverse as environmental governance, politics, leadership and innovation, business and entrepreneurship, marketing, arts and culture, and history.

Former British Prime Minister David Cameron is teaching a course called “Politics and the Practice of Government in an Age of Disruption”. Meanwhile, Senator Matteo Renzi, an Italian politician and former prime minister, is teaching a course called “From Renaissance to AI: Cities, Innovation and Building the Future.”

Oxford University professional ballet dancer and academic quantum physicist Merritt Moore asks what the future of human-computer interaction might look like. Dana Burde, associate professor and director of international education at NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, is teaching a class in Athens, Greece, called “The Role of International Peacebuilding and Education,” and conducting a seminar for the class.

NYUAD Vice Chancellor Mariët Westermann, who is teaching her signature J-Term course on Eden in Abu Dhabi, said: “J-Term is more than a unique international study experience; it reflects our university’s strong commitment to global education The courses are designed to illuminate the interdependence between local knowledge and global awareness, while promoting intercultural research and insight into complex global issues. Our aim is to equip students with the right tools and shared experiences to enable them to To act with moral wisdom and to be responsible citizens and leaders in our communities in the UAE and the wider world.”

Carol Brandt, Assistant Vice Chancellor and Vice Provost for Global Education and Outreach, added: “While the J-Term lasts only three weeks, it has tremendous potential due to its immersive nature and links to theoretical and experiential learning.
