Padma Lakshmi ‘relieved’ as ex-Salman Rushdie ‘survives’ after stabbing Entertainment

Padma Lakshmi expressed relief that her ex-husband Sir Salman Rushdie had “survived” after being brutally stabbed at an event in New York on Friday (08.12.22).

The famous 75-year-old author was airlifted to a hospital and placed on a ventilator after being stabbed in the neck, abdomen, eyes, chest and thigh with a knife while preparing to speak at the Chautauqua Institute. He was finally able to breathe independently and “speak a few words” over the weekend (08.13.22-08.14.22), with his ex-partner Padma now expressing her desire for a “speedy recovery”.

“@SalmanRushdie relieved after Friday’s nightmare,” Lakshmi, 51, tweeted. “I am anxious and speechless, I can finally breathe a sigh of relief. Now I hope to recover quickly.”

Actress/model turned TV chef Padma was married to Rushdie from 2004 to 2007.

Rushdie’s son Zafar previously confirmed his father had turned off the ventilator and was able to “see a few words” despite the “life-changing” injuries.

He wrote: “My dad remains in a critical condition and is receiving extensive ongoing treatment in hospital. We are very relieved to have been able to say a few words yesterday as he was taken off a ventilator and extra oxygen.

“While his life-changing injury was severe, his usual combative and defiant sense of humor remained witty.”

Zafar went on to thank the police and doctors who cared for his father, as well as the audience in New York speaking, who arrived to defend him and provide first aid after the attack.

Hadi Matar, 24, pleaded not guilty to attempted murder at an arraignment hearing on Saturday (13/8/22).

“Hadi Matar, the man responsible for the attack, has now been formally charged with attempted second-degree murder and second-degree assault,” Chautauqua County District Attorney Jason Schmidt said before the hearing.

Rushdie has been subjected to death threats from Islamists for years after publishing his controversial 1988 novel, “The Satanic Verses,” which was considered blasphemous by many Muslims.

Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, issued a fatwa calling for the assassination of Rushdie, the author of which went into hiding for nearly a decade.
