Pages of the Times: ADEK Launches ‘Battle of the Books’ to Foster Teen Reading Culture

The Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) has launched a school team competition – Battle of the Books – to foster a reading culture for young people and create a generation of passionate readers.

Launched during the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair, Battle of the Books is open to individuals and teams of four students in grades 7-10 from public, private or charter schools.

“The Battle of the Books underscores the Ministry of Education’s commitment to integrating the culture of reading as part of students’ daily lives,” ADEK Deputy Minister HE Amer Al Hammadi explained. “It is an activity essential to their development and education. It promotes cognitive development, helping to develop their creativity, empathy and a deeper understanding of the world around them and cultures different from their own. Reading helps students Improve literacy and concentration, which will positively impact their academic performance.”

The competition will feature individual summer reading challenges in July and August. Participating students are encouraged to read as many books of their choice as possible to qualify for the individual award categories.Registration will be open until June 30th, registered students receive a digital reading journal to enter their readings, as well as regular surprise challenges and plot twists. Team categories challenge participants to read different types of books in English or Arabic, including mystery, fiction, adventure and poetry, and then answer questions about the content of the books they read. The competition is divided into two phases, culminating in a grand live final in March 2023, coinciding with UAE Reading Month.

In the first phase, from September to November, schools will prepare their teams through on-campus training. Approximately 72 teams will compete for places in the inter-school semifinal qualifiers in January and February 2023, with school-to-school games held through live draws.

The knockout rounds will continue until the top teams in each category remain, and then each team will advance to the finals of the competition.

The finals will take the form of a live quiz game show where teams will compete for the championship. The final winning team of the Battle of the Books will lift the championship trophy and will award valuable additional prizes to eligible participating students in different categories.
