Pat Boone praises Elvis’ notorious manager ‘liar’ | Entertainment

[ad_1]

Pat Boone said Elvis’ manager, Colonel Tom Parker, was a “liar”.

The ‘Not Too Shameful’ hit producer details how the man thought to have swindled Elvis out of millions of dollars prevented him from using the King of Rock and Roll name on his cover album.

The 88-year-old singer told the US edition of Closer Magazine after being asked if he knew Elvis’ infamous manager (Tom Hanks brought to life in Baz Lurhmann’s 2022 biopic “Elvis”) : “I know him well. I made an album in the early ’60s called ‘Pat Sings Elvis’. But Colonel Tom was a liar. He wanted the royalties to use Elvis’ name. So we called it ‘Pat Boone Sings’ Guess Who?” On the cover, I was wearing a gold suit and posing as Elvis with a guitar, but I never mentioned Elvis by name.”

Pat got his own backing.

He said: “Well, it became a big hit. Tom Parker sent me a membership card for a club he started called the Snowman Club. It was for people who were snowing or rushing people. He was the ultimate snowman. Liar, I lied to him.”

The “State Fair” star also shared his encounters with Elvis — who died of a heart attack in 1977 at the age of 42 — including “at a sock store” in the ’50s when he lacked “social graces.” .

“He was about eight months behind me, we were the same age,” he said. “In the second half of the ’50s, I had 41 chart records and he had 40. In October 1955, he was arrested backstage at a sock store in Cleveland. Introduced to me. He asked me to shake hands, but he didn’t [with confidence] Because his parents didn’t teach him social etiquette. I could tell he was uncomfortable talking to me. “

The ‘I Almost Lost My Mind’ producer shares how they later ‘became really good friends’ when they ventured into show business.

“Two or three years later, we met while we were filming on 20th Century Fox,” Pat said. “We would visit each other back and forth. We both rented in Bel Air and we became great friends.”
