It was the calm before the storm. People’s Fighters, a thrilling event that will take place over the weekend, showcase the beauty of Cuban professional boxing in the Middle East and subcontinent. Ahead of Saturday’s gala night at the Emirates Golf Club, the fighters looked at each other one last time for glory before heading to the ring.
The headline is, of course, the fight between multiple world champions Guillermo Rigondeaux and Vincent Astrolabio, who will be crowned WBC International Bantam Weight Champions. Both fighters participated in a weigh-in at Emirates Golf Club on Thursday.
The night was also packed with cards, with Dayan and Mustafa kicking off at 7:30 pm, followed by an 8:10 pm match between Armando and Jackson. Yan Marcos is scheduled to play Kuvesa at 9pm, while Jesus Gamboa will play Manish at 9.30pm. Jadier Herrera, who has won five so far, five by KO, will start his first professional title fight at 10pm against Mark John Yap. Herrera was supposed to fight Lausa, but the latter unfortunately pulled out due to an accident. Since arriving in Dubai six months ago, Herrera has started this journey and has gained a lot of experience.
This is the second edition of People’s Warrior. The first edition took place in Dubai on October 23rd and was attended by some of the best boxers from Cuba as well as an exciting line-up of upcoming international boxers.
“The core boxers are mainly emerging talents and we are providing them with a platform and nurturing their development in the homegrown professional boxing industry in the UAE and beyond. People’s Fighters will always fight for their country and their compatriots, hence the name People’s Fighters. The name Connect with ordinary boxing talents to showcase their skills and grow on this platform for greater glory and success,” organizers said in a statement.
“The UAE Cuban Boxing Club is committed to maintaining this unique style of boxing and giving fighters the opportunity to perfect their craft through a series of Grand Prix-style events planned throughout the year. This event is for fans to see for themselves. Cuban Boxing UAE is supported by many great champions such as multiple world champion Guillermo Rigondo. Former pound pound and world champion Guillermo Rigondo vs Vincent Astara Bio will be in contention for the WBC International Bantam Weight Championship. Pedro Diaz, a Cuban-American boxing coach who has competed with the Cuban national team in four Olympics, will also be in attendance. A professional boxing trainer, Diaz has trained a group of top boxers.
“Rigondo is a true example of a people’s warrior who fled his country to become a pro and won an undisputed world title. He is here to show the world that he still has it and to inspire young and upcoming People’s Warriors,” the organizers added.
