Pianist Lang Lang to perform at Granada Theater | Arts & Entertainment

[ad_1]

UCSB Arts & Lectures (A&L) will present world-renowned pianist Lang Lang on Monday, February 27 at 7pm at the Granada Theatre. The event marked Lang Lang’s first Santa Barbara appearance in eight years.

Fueled by enthusiasm for one of the most challenging pieces in the repertoire, Lang Lang’s rendition of Bach’s “Goldberg Variations” represents a milestone in his illustrious career. Lang Lang’s expressive performance of this monumental work was twenty years in the making.

Looking back on his interpretation process, Lang Lang said, “It takes you to another level of thinking.”

Lang Lang is a leading figure in the world of classical music. A pianist, educator, and philanthropist, he has become one of the world’s most influential and steadfast ambassadors for the arts in the 21st century.

Whether playing for billions at the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics or playing for hundreds of children in public schools, he is a master at communicating through music.

Hailed by The New York Times as “the hottest artist in classical music,” Lang Lang holds sold-out concerts around the world.

Lang Lang is known for thinking outside the box, often stepping into different musical worlds. His performances at the Grammys with Metallica, Pharrell Williams or jazz legend Herbie Hancock are watched by millions.

In 2008, he founded the Lang Lang International Music Foundation, which aims to cultivate future top pianists, advocate cutting-edge music education, and cultivate young audiences through live music experience.

In 2013, Lang Lang was appointed by the Secretary-General of the United Nations as a Messenger of Peace focusing on global education.

Lang Lang started playing the piano at the age of 3, performed publicly for the first time before the age of 5, entered the Beijing Central Conservatory of Music at the age of 9, and won the first prize at the Tchaikovsky International Young Musician Competition at the age of 13.

He had his big break at the age of 17, replacing André Watts at the Gala of the Century, performing Tchaikovsky’s “Part 1″ with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Christoph Eschenbach. A Piano Concerto”: he became famous overnight.

Lang Lang’s efforts to attract new audiences to classical music have brought him worldwide recognition. He received the 2010 Crystal Award in Davos and was selected as one of 250 Young Global Leaders by the World Economic Forum.

He is an honorary doctorate recipient of the Royal Academy of Music, Manhattan School of Music and New York University.

In December 2011, he won the highest honor award issued by the Ministry of Culture of the People’s Republic of China, and received the highest civilian honor and letter from Germany (Federal Republic of Germany) and France (Medal of Arts).

Lang Lang presented by UCSB Arts & Lectures. General public tickets are $51-156; UCSB students $31 (current student ID required); includes facility fee.
