McLaren and Alpine have struck a deal to ensure their new drivers for next season will be able to race with them for the first time before the end of the year.
Oscar Piastery Pierre Gasly will drive for McLaren and Alpine respectively in playoff testing at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi.
The two teams were in a dispute over Piastery’s service, which McLaren settled in favour earlier this year. Team chief Andreas Seidl has confirmed they have now agreed terms under which Piastri will join the squad between the end of the season and the end of the year test.He’s already done a run in one of the team’s old cars Paul Ricard In France.
“We reached a settlement with all parties involved, which allowed us to put the Oscar in an old car and test it privately at Paul Ricard last week,” Seidl said. “It will also allow us to officially start working with Oscar on Monday after the last race in Abu Dhabi, which allows us to have him in the young driver test in Abu Dhabi, in the current car, which is Something we’re really looking forward to, and it’s great for us and for Oscar.”
Seidl said it was too early to draw any conclusions about Piastri’s potential.
“Driving an old car alone on a track isn’t a lot of reading,” he said. “Finally, starting with us at the Oscars is a good start, and that’s about it for now.”
Alpine initially announced Piastri as its replacement Fernando Alonso next year, but was surprised to find that its reserve driver had already signed on to race McLaren. Instead, they hired Pierre Gasly from AlphaTauri, who will drive them in the Yas Marina test.
“The season is almost over, it’s time to make a deal, we did it, and we’re delighted that Oscar was able to start his McLaren career and test after the last race in Abu Dhabi,” Alpine team principal Otmar Szafnauer Say.
“We’re going to do the same thing with Pierre, we’re going to put Pierre in the car in Abu Dhabi, we’re going to start doing our driver pairing, get his feedback and get him this year on our cars and starting to understand what he likes and dislikes, hopefully making some changes to next year’s car with Pierre’s input into account.”
