Piastri to drive for McLaren at Abu Dhabi test after Alpine deal

[ad_1]

McLaren has struck a deal with Alpine to allow Oscar Piastri to take part in youth driver testing after next week’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Piastri is at the centre of a tug-of-war between the two teams after signing Daniel Ricciardo to McLaren, but his current team, Alpine, claim he has a contract in force until 2023 . The FIA’s Contract Recognition Committee ruled that Alpine had no such deal, leaving Piastri free to join McLaren once his existing contract expires at the end of the year.

The two teams have now reached an agreement that will allow Piastri to use the current car in year-end testing – two days after the final round of the season – after the Australian is still playing Paul Ricard for McKay After the wheel team drives the 2021 car.

“I can confirm that eventually we reached a settlement with all the parties involved, which allowed us to put the Oscar in an old car at Paul Ricard last week and test it privately, which will also allow us to officially begin working with Oscar after the final race in Abu Dhabi on Monday,” said McLaren team principal Andreas Seidl. “It also allows us to have him in the current car at the Young Drivers Test in Abu Dhabi, which is something we are very much looking forward to. It’s great for us and Oscar.

“Honestly, driving an old car alone on the track isn’t a lot to read. In the end, it’s a good start for Oscar, and that’s it for now. The most important thing for the team right now is to work with Daniel ( Ricciardo) to focus on the last two race weekends together.

“We’re both still committed to really trying to finish our chapter together, and then we’ll turn our full attention to Oscar and Lando (Norris) and be ready again for next year’s season.”

The deal with Alpine was also able to run immediately after Pierre Gasly’s last match in AlphaTauri, RACER understands that Nyck de Vries will start his AlphaTauri work during the Abu Dhabi test.

“The season was almost over and it was time to make a deal, and we did it,” Szafnauer said. “We are delighted that Oscar can start his McLaren career and test after the last race in Abu Dhabi and we will do the same with Pierre, who will be in the car in Abu Dhabi.

“We’re going to start working on our driving pairings and get his feedback and initial thoughts on this year’s car to see what he likes and doesn’t like and hopefully make some changes to next year’s car to help.”
