MASSENA — The digital brand manager at Explore Massena had some ideas for an annual campaign, but implementing them would take some time and money.
“One of the things I was trying to accomplish before I sent out the report last Friday was I built two events,” Jason Hendricks from H3 Designs told Massena City Council.
His report includes proposed activities, a projected budget, potential sources of funding and a “work action plan,” which lays out step-by-step what needs to be done to make the activities a reality.
These include “Rockin’ the River 2023” in the summer and the “St. Lawrence River Fall Foliage Fun Ride” in the fall.
Tentative prices for the “Rockin’ the River 2023” event at Massena Town Beach are $9,000 to $16,500 — $500 for venue rentals, $3,000 to $8,000 for performers and $2,500 to $5,000 for fireworks, Mr. Hendricks said , $500 to $1,000 for performers. Marketing, $1,000 for supplies like tents, tables, chairs, and signage, $500 for security, $500 for amenities like restrooms, trash and recycling bins, and first aid stations, and $500 for miscellaneous things like permits and insurance cost.
Possible funding sources could include sponsorships from local businesses to cover fees of $5,000 to $15,000, vendor space fees of $300 to $500, and donations of $1,000, he said.
But, he said, there’s more to it than raising money. Mr. Hendricks said they needed to secure dates and times, determine budgets, select vendors, book performers, market the event, arrange parking and security, provide facilities, build stages and vendor booths, and coordinate the fireworks display team.
The first “Rock the River” took place last summer. It includes a children’s fishing competition on the Mount Wilson Causeway, as well as music, food, vendors, fireworks and more at the entrance. All activities are free to attend.
“This is what the 2023 edition will look like,” Mr Hendricks said.
The 2022 event is part of the Major League Fishing Pro Tour Championship, Tackle Warehouse TITLE presented by Mercury. The six-day tournament showcases the top 48 pros on the Pro Tour standings, as well as the previous year’s defending champion and angler of the year — all vying for the grand prize of $235,000.
The “Fall Foliage Fun Ride on the St. Lawrence” has a low price of $1,500 — $1,000 for 500 full-color patches distributed to participants and $500 for flyers, social media and advertising.
But, like “Rockin’ the River 2023,” the to-do list is long. It includes deciding on a route, choosing a date and time, finding sponsors, obtaining necessary permits, recruiting volunteers, promoting the event, arranging rest stops, coordinating with local businesses, providing safety information, setting up registration, providing support vehicles, and securing a fun and friendly environment.
“I’ve been looking to add something different. I’ve had some initial conversations with some people,” Mr Hendricks said. “I’m just doing something cool to put on an event and hopefully attract tourists and bring more attention to Massena in a positive way.”
