Police evacuate hostage incident in Dresden shopping center | World News

Police evacuated a shopping center and surrounding area in the eastern German city of Dresden after ending the hostage situation.

In the statement posted to TwitterPolice confirmed the hostage situation was over and two people who were apparently unhurt were reportedly cared for after the shooting.

It is not yet known whether the suspect has been arrested.

At around 8:30 am local time (7:30 GMT), Dresden radio said an armed man entered the Ammonhof office building where the broadcaster is located and opened fire.

On Saturday morning, officials urged people to avoid the city center and ordered the Striezelmarkt Christmas market to remain closed while the operation took place.

Shortly after 11:30 a.m. local time (10:30 GMT), police confirmed they had been in contact with the perpetrators, who were reportedly taking two hostages at the Altmarkt-Galerie shopping centre. A negotiating team.

Dresden radio reported that police spokesman Thomas Geithner issued an official press statement on the operation.

“According to Geithner, the man is suffering from a mental illness, so experts have been consulted and the man should be persuaded to voluntarily give up and end this situation,” the radio station reported.

A 62-year-old woman was found dead in an apartment building in Prohlis in Dresden on Saturday, police separately confirmed. Her 40-year-old son is listed as a suspect.

News outlet TAG24 reported that police linked the hostage-taking incident at the Altmarkt-Galerie shopping center to the killing, but declined to provide further details.

The lockdown in the city center has now been lifted and police said the incident “is no longer a dangerous situation”. But the Altmarkt-Galerie shopping center remains closed.
