[ad_1]

A 99-year-old woman believed to be the world’s oldest primary school pupil has died peacefully at her home in Kenya, her grandson has told the BBC. Priscilla Sitienei began experiencing health complications after attending class on Wednesday. She has been preparing for her final exams, which are due to start next week, the report said.

Priscilla Sitienei, who grew up in British-occupied Kenya and lived through her country’s struggle for independence, inspired a film that garnered praise from UNESCO.

Priscilla Sitienei told UNESCO: “I want to set an example not only for them, but for other unschooled, uneducated girls around the world that you are no different from a chicken.”

Priscilla Sitienei joined Leaders Vision Preparatory School in 2010, but she has also been a midwife for over 65 years in the village of Ndalat in the Great Rift Valley. She even helped deliver some of her classmates, who were 10 to 14 years old at the time.

Priscilla Sitienei, affectionately known as “Gogo” – which means grandmother in Kalenjin – told the BBC in 2015 that she had finally learned to read and write because she never had the opportunity as a child.

“They tell me they’re too old. I tell them: ‘Well, I’m in school, so should you.’ I see kids who are lost, kids without a father, just going round and round, hopeless. I want to inspire them to school,” Priscilla Sitienei said.
