Raheem Sterling has left the World Cup in Qatar to be with his family after his home was burglarized.
The 27-year-old England international – who missed Sunday’s (04.12.22) win over Senegal – has left the team and returned to London following the incident at the weekend.
In a statement, his spokesman said the football star was “prioritizing” the well-being of his three young children.
He was “shocked” by the news and “as soon as he was alerted he wanted to go home”.
Meanwhile, England manager Gareth Southgate added: “At the moment, obviously his priority is to be with his family and we will support that and give him as much time as possible.
“It’s a situation where he needs time with his family and I don’t want him to put any pressure on that.
“Sometimes football is not the most important thing, family should come first.”
Meanwhile, Surrey Police reported that a number of items had been stolen from the property.
They also denied that the intruders were armed.
They said in a statement: “On Saturday, December 3, the resident returned to the residence after returning home from international travel.
“They contacted the police just before 9pm to report that some jewelery including watches had been stolen.
“Officers were at the address later that night and returned this morning to speak with the occupants. It is not yet clear when the property was stolen and establishing that date is a key part of our investigation.”
They added: “We are aware of media reports of an armed suspect being involved, however, at this time, we assure our community that no witnesses have come forward to speak out, nor have there been any reported threats of violence related to this incident.
“Anyone with information should contact police directly if they have not already been informed.”
