A group of die-hard LSU women’s basketball fans were in for a surprise when they arrived by bus from Baton Rouge Saturday night at their hotel in Columbia, South Carolina. Members of the team and coaching staff switched roles, created a cheering tunnel and made their way outside the hotel to greet the crowd.
At about 10:20 p.m. Saturday night, stunned LSU fans got off their buses and hauled their suitcases toward the hotel door as the team cheered and chanted, “LSU! LSU! LSU!”
Of course, the fans joined in too.
Head Coach Kim Mulkey and her team were on hand to cheer on the fans.
“When they walked in and saw our team chanting and greeting them, some of these fans started crying,” Malkey said. “One woman said, ‘It made the 12-hour trip worth it.'”
Kailyn Rice, director of recruiting for LSU’s women’s basketball program, said that throughout her career, she’s never seen anything close to a regular-season response.
“From the fans who were already in Columbia when we arrived at the hotel greeting us, to the team greeting the fan bus late at night, it was a Final Four-like atmosphere,” Rice said. “The LSU fans give it their all.”
The game between the two undefeated teams kicks off Sunday at 1 p.m. on ESPN.
