Rosamund Pike, best known as Moiraine Damodred in the TV adaptation of The Wheel of Time, is now recording an audiobook of the series.
Pike’s audiobook director is her mother, Caroline Friend, a former opera singer. Their shared love of audiobooks dates back to Pike’s childhood.
“When I was a kid we used to take long car trips and we would listen to books on tape,” Pike said electronic warfare. “We always talk about the readers and whether they’re successful, because some we don’t really respond to, but others are absolutely great.”
Pike sees voiceovers for audiobooks as a natural extension of her acting career, having previously voiced books such as Restless and Pride and Prejudice.
However, she highlights the challenges of being the voice of each character in the story and transitioning between emotions.
“When you’re playing some very difficult scenes, you can get emotional, but the narrative between the dialogue has to be clear,” Pike said. “That’s one of the difficulties: the characters can be broken, but the narration has to stay, and you have to be all of those people.
Making the audiobook deepened Pike and friends’ appreciation for the scale and complexity of Jordan’s “Wheel of Time” series, which went well beyond the original “Lord of the Rings” comparisons.
Peck believes that Jordan’s work reflects his journey to understand and reconcile the contradictions and dualities of the world. The first three volumes of the audiobook, narrated by Pike, are available now, while the second season of the series premieres Sept. 1 on Prime Video.
