Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced plans to launch e-scooter operations in 11 new residential areas starting next year.
These are Al Tawar 1 and 2, Umm Suqeim 3, Al Garhoud, Muhaisnah 3, Umm Hurair 1, Al Safa 2, Al Barsha South 2, Al Barsha 3, Al Quoz 4 and Nad Al Sheba, the RTA said in a statement. 1 .
As a result, the total number of regions where e-scooters are allowed to operate has increased to 21, and the total track length for bicycles, e-scooters, and safe and shared routes has increased from 185 to 390 km.
These tracks involve major attractions, 10 public transport stations and 18 major destinations such as parks and commercial outlets. It will also enhance first- and last-mile journeys and reduce reliance on private cars, it added.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Executive Board of RTA, said that the selection of zones and tracks was based on technical research and data analysis of various districts in Dubai to assess their safety, traffic volume, readiness, infrastructure, population density and integration with the metro Proximity to public transport.
“By operating e-scooters in these areas, the total length of bike and e-scooter tracks will jump to 390 kilometers, serving 114,503 residents,” he said.
Al Tayer said the expansion of operating bikes and e-scooters to new areas will help support efforts to transform Dubai into a bike-friendly city, as well as the migration to less polluting sustainable modes of transport.
“It also encourages visitors to use alternative modes of travel and supports first- and last-mile strategies,” he noted.
“Work is underway in these areas to complete track construction that meets the highest international traffic safety standards. Improvements currently underway in these areas include ground markings, directional signs, and the conversion of internal roads into safe areas by descending for rider safety, The speed limit is from 40km/h to 30km/h,” he added.
