After the much-anticipated sequel to 2000s blockbuster Gladiator has been confirmed, Russell Crowe reflects on his role in the first Gladiator, explaining why he feels “a little bit jealous” about the new cast.
Crowe sat down for an interview with Collider about his latest horror film, The Pope’s Exorcist, to share his thoughts on Paul Mezcal and Denzel Washington joining the sequel’s cast.
“I mean, look, the only thing I really felt was a little bit of jealousy, you know? Because I was obviously a much younger guy, and it was a huge experience in my life,” Crowe explained.
“It changed my life, really. It changed how people thought of me and how I made a living, and, you know, I’ve been lucky enough to be in a lot of big movies, but those legs-on-legs movies were incredible of.”
Crowe won an Oscar for his performance as Maximus. He added, “It’s 2023 and we made this movie in 1999. I promise you, somewhere in the world tonight, Gladiator is going to be on prime time. And every movie you make Movies don’t always have that longevity, so, obviously, it has a special place in my heart,” he explained.
Speaking of his cameo in the sequel, the State of Play actor said, “I’m sure at some point they’re going to want to ask me something, but they haven’t asked any questions in a while.”
On The Ryan Tubridi Show, Crowe shared, “It’s an extension of the narrative, but it’s long past Maximus’ death, so it doesn’t involve me at all.”
I’ve heard lad Paul is a good guy and I wish him the best of luck. I think they picked the story from young Lucius, stepping into the role of emperor. I think it’s a really smart idea in the world of cinema we’re creating. “
gladiator 2 Scheduled for release on November 22, 2024.
