Sania Mirza ended her stellar career with a first-round loss at the WTA Dubai Duty Free Championship, losing in straight sets with American partner Madison Keys here on Tuesday. Sania and the Keys lost 4-6 0-6 in one hour to the formidable Russian duo of Vernokia Kudermetova and Liudmila Samsonova. Veronica, 25, is ranked 11th in singles and fifth in doubles, while Lyudmila is ranked 13th in the world in doubles. Sagna, 36, who turned professional in 2003, came out of competitive tennis with six Grand Slam titles, including three in women’s doubles with Swiss legend Martina Hingis. She has won two of three mixed doubles with compatriot Mahesh Bhupathi (2009 Australian Open, 2012 French Open). She won the US Open trophy with Bruno Suarez. In an opening locked at 4-4, the break was quick. From there, Kudmetova and Samsonova again broke the combination of Sagna and Keys to lead 5-4 and put themselves in position to serve. They did it with ease, dropping a point in the 10th game. Sania and her partner were broken in the first game of the second set before they became one-way traffic as they got stuck in the bagels.
