SeaWorld Abu Dhabi will open to the public on 23 May. Located on Yas Island, it will be home to eight different immersive realms. Visitors to the first SeaWorld Park outside of the US will be able to enjoy animal encounters, rides and entertainment, as well as retail and dining experiences.

SeaWorld Abu Dhabi is home to over 100,000 marine animals. Each realm is designed by leading animal care specialists, scientists and engineers using cutting-edge technologies to emulate the animals’ natural environments.

Ahead of the grand launch, blooloop speaks to Mohamed Abdalla Al Zaabi, Miral’s group CEO. He talks about what this park means to the region and tells us what guests can expect from SeaWorld Abu Dhabi.

Miral and SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment

A collaboration between Miral and SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment, SeaWorld Yas Island, Abu Dhabi is a next-generation marine life theme park and the region’s first of its kind. It will tell a captivating ‘One Ocean’ story that uncovers the interconnectivity between life on Earth and our ocean.

“The park will deliver engaging and immersive family-friendly experiences, featuring up-close animal encounters, state-of-the-art aquariums, dynamic animal habitats, thrill rides, interactive educational experiences, inspiring entertainment as well as dining and shopping experiences,” says Al Zaabi.

“The park aims to inspire guests to learn more about marine life and support conservation efforts through fun and engaging experiences.”

The Marine Life Theme Park sits on five indoor levels, with a total area of around 183,000 sqm. The park, once open, will also contain more than 58 million litres of water. It will be home to more than 100,000 marine animals including 150 species of birds, fish, mammals, and reptiles.

“Amongst its many high points, SeaWorld Abu Dhabi will be home to the world’s largest and most expansive multi-species marine-life aquarium, containing over 25 million litres of water,” adds Al Zaabi. “There will be over 68,000 marine animals in this remarkable habitat. This includes sharks, manta rays and more, giving guests the chance to learn more about the endless diversity of the vast ocean.”

The eight themed realms at SeaWorld Abu Dhabi

At SeaWorld Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, guests will embark on a journey through the One Ocean story to discover the vast ocean through eight unique realms. This adventure begins at Abu Dhabi Ocean and continues to One Ocean. Guests will also discover the MicroOcean, Endless Ocean, Tropical Ocean and Rocky Point realms, as well as the Arctic and Antarctica realms of the Polar Ocean.

“These realms show how guests will be connected to the ocean and the ocean connects us all through up-close animal encounters featuring various habitats and interactive experiences as well as exciting rides and attractions. There are also over 15 interactive experiences and rides. There are also 17 dining options and 13 retail outlets for guests to enjoy throughout their visit.

“The eight immersive realms provide visitors with a comprehensive understanding of our planet’s ocean, its marine life and ecosystems.”

In the Abu Dhabi Ocean realm, guests will learn more about the UAE’s long connection to the ocean. They will also have a chance to get up close with animals native to the emirate and wider region. Acting as the portal to the rest of the Marine Life Theme Park, guests will then enter the One Ocean realm. This will transport them to the remaining six realms, bringing them closer to the wonders of the ocean.

“This approach allows guests to fully engage with the educational aspects of the park while enjoying an unparalleled entertainment experience,” says Al Zaabi.

An immersive experience

From an entertainment perspective, SeaWorld Abu Dhabi will deliver next-generation experiences for all its guests.

“A must-see experience is the One Epic Ocean show in the One Ocean realm. The show takes guests on an incredible journey through the ocean’s depths and uses amazing cutting-edge technology. This includes bespoke multi-camera rigs, complete with state-of-the-art high-resolution 360-degree imaging deployed on a global expedition below and above water.

“This has resulted in an extraordinary, immersive experience, capturing every detail of the ocean, from the vibrant colours of the coral reefs to the graceful movements of marine life, creating a truly immersive 360-degree experience. To say we went to great depths to curate this content is no stretch. We commissioned a professional documentary crew who travelled around the world on a journey to capture the extraordinary footage of the One Ocean realm in the highest possible resolution.”

SeaWorld Abu Dhabi also uses spatial audio technology. This algorithmically moves dozens of sounds simultaneously around the space to the location you are seeing in each image, explains Al Zaabi:

“The result is that guests can hear every ripple and splash of the ocean, along with the sounds of the animals that inhabit it, bringing the entire experience to life. We have also incorporated a fleet of drones into the performance. These fly in perfect sync with the music and imagery.

“One Epic Ocean is a prime example of the park’s commitment to delivering a highly immersive and technologically advanced entertainment experience.”

Animal welfare is key

SeaWorld Abu Dhabi has also set a new standard of excellence in zoological care. Leading animal care specialists, scientists and engineers designed the park’s habitats.. Using new technologies and a welfare-focused approach to emulate natural environments, these habitats provide a positive experience not only for the animals but also for guests.

Al Zaabi says:

“All the habitats and ecosystems at SeaWorld Abu Dhabi have been designed to simulate each animal’s natural habitat. We use bespoke lighting and unique filtration systems to ensure optimum water quality for the animals, with the close monitoring of our highly qualified zoological and veterinary professionals every day to ensure their wellbeing.”

These habitats feature innovative systems such as the Animal Life Support System (ALSS) and the Advanced Animal Lighting System (AALS):

“The ALSS manages the water quality in all regards, supporting the diverse array of fish and mammals living together in dynamic environments. Meanwhile, the custom-designed AALS simulates natural night/day cycles as well as seasonal light cycles. It also provides the health benefits of full-spectrum light, similar to natural daylight.

“By creating the best possible living environment for each animal, we are not only promoting their wellbeing but also helping to inspire our guests to care for and protect these incredible animals.”

Specially designed habitats at SeaWorld Abu Dhabi

SeaWorld Abu Dhabi believes that every animal deserves a living environment that is as close to its natural habitat as possible. Its habitats are designed to provide dynamic spaces that encourage natural behaviours and promote overall health and well-being.

“We understand that each species has unique needs, and we work closely with experts to ensure that our habitats are tailored to meet those. From temperature control to feeding schedules, every detail is carefully considered.”

This will also be SeaWorld’s first park not to feature orcas.

“SeaWorld Abu Dhabi is committed to applying the highest zoological standards and best practices for animal welfare set by internationally recognized animal welfare organizations to safeguard the wellbeing of all animals within its care as well as those it has rescued. We are fostering a culture where animals come first and are continually provided with opportunities to thrive.

“Although orcas are not part of the theme park, we will offer chances to educate the community and raise awareness about this inspiring animal, as well as other marine life species.”

Yas SeaWorld Research and Rescue

Abu Dhabi’s Yas SeaWorld Research & Rescue is located next door to SeaWorld Abu Dhabi. It opened earlier this year. Building on SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment’s legacy, experience and knowledge gained over nearly 60 years in animal care and rescue, with over 40,000 animals rescued to date, Yas SeaWorld Research & Rescue is central to SeaWorld Abu Dhabi’s mission.

“The centre is the first-of-its-kind dedicated marine research, rescue, rehabilitation and return centre in the region,” says Al Zaabi. “Yas SeaWorld Research & Rescue is a cornerstone in the emirate’s journey of education and conservation. Our goal is to inspire the next generation of marine scientists to learn more about Abu Dhabi’s long-term vision of protecting our marine wildlife and their habitats.”

“The Arabian Gulf is a unique and delicate ecosystem. We have a commitment to promoting habitat protection and ocean health initiatives, as well as conducting rescue and rehabilitation efforts to support conservation projects. Our mission is to preserve the environment and ensure the long-term survival of marine life in the region. We work towards this goal every day.”

The centre’s equipment and facilities can handle various marine animals, from turtles to dugongs. This ensures that every animal receives the care it needs. It also has laboratories to test coral, seaweed, and other marine life as part of applied research studies for marine ecosystem restoration, such as aquaculture, seagrass cultivation, and coral reproduction.

Sustainability at SeaWorld Abu Dhabi

Sustainability was a crucial consideration during the development of SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, says Al Zaabi:

“As part of our commitment to the Year of Sustainability, declared by the UAE President, His Highness Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Marine Life Theme Park will embed Sheikh Zayed’s legacy and profound respect for nature and all its beauty, as well as play a key role in promoting environmental awareness and protecting marine life in Abu Dhabi, the UAE and the wider region.”

One example is the collaboration between Miral, Masdar, and EDF through their joint venture, Emerge.

“Emerge is responsible for setting up a rooftop solar power project at SeaWorld Abu Dhabi. This project will use rooftop solar photovoltaic systems with a total capacity of 8.2 megawatts, making the park more energy-efficient and reducing its carbon footprint. This initiative shows SeaWorld Abu Dhabi’s commitment to environmental responsibility. It positions the park as a leading example of sustainable development within the entertainment industry.”

Additionally, SeaWorld Abu Dhabi plans to achieve the Pearl 2 rating as recognized under Estidama. This is a UAE building design methodology and framework for measuring sustainability performance. The program is a key aspect of the Abu Dhabi Vision 2030 drive to build the emirate in accordance with innovative green standards.

A strong partnership

The partnership between SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment and Miral comes naturally, explains Al Zaabi:

“Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island is the perfect place for the park. It has world-class facilities at every other stop as well as supreme resources that support local and global conservation efforts.

“With SeaWorld’s over 60 years of unmatched experience in marine research, rescue, conservation, and animal welfare, together with Miral’s capabilities of conceiving, creating, operating, and managing world-class immersive destinations and experiences, the partnership is sure to deliver a next-generation Marine Life Theme Park to the UAE and the region.”

SeaWorld Abu Dhabi will further position Abu Dhabi as a top global tourism destination, he adds.

“SeaWorld Abu Dhabi will showcase the city’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and marine conservation. The addition of this world-class marine life park also complements Miral’s existing portfolio. It is a testament to its commitment to supporting Abu Dhabi’s vision to become a leading global destination, as well as contributing to its growth and economic diversification.”

Forming a deep connection at SeaWorld Abu Dhabi

Talking about his favourite parts of the project, Al Zaabi says:

“As a young boy, I remember spending many hours around water – swimming in the sea, out on a boat, chasing hermit crabs, being amazed by the abundance of marine life, and ultimately harbouring a deep love, respect and awe for the sea. I got that same sense of excitement seeing the world-class SeaWorld Abu Dhabi take shape around us and seeing the hours, weeks, months, and years of work from my team bringing the Marine Life Theme Park to life.

“While I am always proud of what we achieve, this one holds a special place in my heart. With this opening, we are playing a key role in educating and inspiring the future generation to protect our marine wildlife. And it is not one that we take lightly. We are advancing the conservation efforts in the region, building on over 60 years of experience in marine animal care and rescue by SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment.”

“This region has profound ties to the sea and ocean around us. Our cultural heritage is deeply rooted in its seafaring past. SeaWorld Abu Dhabi will celebrate and honour this maritime legacy. We are offering guests an experience that is both engaging and educational, highlighting the region’s long-standing relationship with the sea.

“In doing so, the park not only provides entertainment and excitement but also fosters a deeper understanding and appreciation for the UAE’s cultural heritage and its ties to the ocean.”
