Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization

GENEVA – The UAE’s economy, which is less than 20 percent dependent on fossil fuels, is the best example in the Gulf region, says WMO Secretary-General Professor Yuka Petri Taalas.

In an interview with the Emirates News Agency (WAM), the international official stressed that moving away from fossil fuel-produced energy is fully considered when discussing the success of minimizing the impact of climate change, as “countries should start replacing fossil fuel energy “The source is climate friendly, like what the UAE has done. “

“The World Economic Forum reaffirms that climate change is a serious economic issue and that if we do not act to mitigate or adapt to climate change within the next decade, the world economy will face a significant threat,” he added. comment on the situation.

“According to the World Meteorological Organization, in addition to accelerating snowmelt, the rate of ocean warming has increased significantly and sea levels have doubled over the past two decades. In addition, the world has begun to witness a significant increase in climate hazards , such as heat waves in Europe, Asia and the United States, floods engulfing Pakistan, and tropical cyclones in previously unseen regions such as southeastern Africa,” commented on the annual report prepared by his organisation.

“The organization has identified growing problems related to water scarcity, drought and forest fires, all of which are extremely detrimental to human life. However, the use of electric vehicles, affordable batteries and other strategies are now part of how to deal with this part of a clearer picture of the challenge,” he continued.

He added that the world had begun to look for solutions, but was not moving fast enough to limit global warming and keep the average temperature at 1.5 degrees Celsius instead of 2 or 2.3 degrees Celsius. “If the world doesn’t act quickly to make this happen, bigger problems and challenges will emerge,” he warned.

Regarding the UAE’s hosting of COP28, the Secretary-General of the international organization expressed his pleasure to travel to Abu Dhabi twice this year and meet Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Chairman-designate of COP28, with many fruitful meetings held with them, he said. .

“The World Meteorological Organization is very pleased with the actions taken by the United Arab Emirates, including the decision to increase investment in clean energy and other projects that support the organization’s strategy to address climate change issues, as well as the decision to locate its headquarters in the UAE. Renewable Energy International The agency (IRENA) is a key player in this space,” he added.
