Senegal gets its first prime minister since 2019

Senegalese President McKee Sall resumed his role as prime minister on Saturday, appointing former economy minister Amadou Ba to the post.

It comes at a time when the West African country is struggling with economic hardship, in part because Coronavirus disease Pandemic global impact and Russian invasion Ukraine.

Sall said the new prime minister would be tasked with tackling the rising cost of living.

“Reducing the cost of living, measures to support youth employment and entrepreneurship, fighting floods and high rents will remain my top priorities,” Saller said in remarks ahead of his appointment on Friday.

Ba responded to those statements on Saturday. “The main priorities outlined by the President include increasing household purchasing power, taming inflation, security, housing, vocational training, employment and entrepreneurship. “

Pakistan will also lead a new cabinet formed after a narrow victory by Saar’s ruling coalition in parliamentary elections.

Saar removed the premiership in 2019. The opposition and parts of civil society denounced his move as an attempt to seize more power.

Concerns about his rule remain, with some accusing him of wanting to break the two-term limit and run again in 2024.
