Sheikh Mohammed Allocates Dh43 Million in Food Aid for Gaza

Sheikh Mohammed In adherence to directives from Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives (MBRGI) has announced a significant contribution of Dh43 million ($11.7 million) for direct food aid to Gaza.

Collaboration with WFP: Strengthening Support

This initiative is conducted in collaboration with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), marking a noteworthy total financial support of Dh230 million (over $62.6 million) from MBRGI to the WFP since the initiation of their partnership in 2021.

Agreements at WEF Davos: A Pledge to Gaza’s Well-being: Sheikh Mohammed

The announcement was made during the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, where MBRGI and WFP signed agreements. The first outlines MBRGI’s commitment to delivering direct food aid, benefitting over one million people in Gaza. Additionally, another agreement focuses on implementing sustainable food projects and providing aid to those in dire need.

Critical Food Insecurity in Gaza: An Urgent Call to Action

The latest Integrated Food Security and Nutrition Phase Classification (IPC) report underscores the severe levels of food insecurity in Gaza, with the entire population facing crisis or worse levels of acute food insecurity. The report raises alarms about the potential for famine if current conditions persist.

WFP’s Ongoing Efforts: A Lifeline for Gaza: Sheikh Mohammed

Since October 7, WFP has been steadfastly delivering food assistance to people in Gaza daily, reaching over 900,000 individuals in December alone.

Global Concerns: The State of Food Security and Nutrition

A report titled ‘The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World,’ jointly published by key organizations, warned in July 2023 about the increasing number of people suffering from hunger, reaching 735 million in 2022—an alarming rise of 122 million compared to 2019. The report cautions against the daunting prospect of not achieving the sustainable development goal of No Hunger by 2030.
