Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has been diagnosed with leukemia after being admitted to hospital, Sky News understands.

“He’s stable. He’s rock solid,” Mr. Berlusconi’s brother Paulo said after visiting him on Wednesday afternoon.

The billionaire media mogul has been unwell several times in recent years Contracting COVID-19 2020.

After being released after 10 days in hospital, he said the disease was “insidious” and the most dangerous challenge he had ever faced.

He had a pacemaker for years, had heart surgery to replace his aortic valve in 2016, and beat prostate cancer. He was admitted to the hospital in January 2022 with a urinary tract infection.

Mr Berlusconi, who last stepped down as prime minister in 2011 as Italy approached a Greek-style debt crisis, faced a number of scandals, most notably his infamous “bunga bunga” parties.

He returned to the Senate following the general election last September.

Mr Berlusconi’s Forza Italia party is part of Prime Minister Georgia Meloni’s right-wing coalition, but he holds no position in the government.

“Sincere and affectionate wishes to Silvio Berlusconi for a speedy recovery,” Ms Meloni wrote on social media, adding: “Forza Silvio (Come on Silvio).”
