Earlier Monday, the Israeli army had been looking for six Palestinian prisoners who managed to escape from a heavily guarded facility in northern Israel.
The prisoners escaped from Gilboa prison, which should be one of the safest facilities in Israel. Such breakthroughs are extremely rare.
Police spokesperson Eli Levy told Israel’s Kan Radio: “Overnight, we received some reports of suspicious persons in the farmland and prison services. They soon discovered that the prisoners in the cell were missing, and 6 of them escaped.”
Officials said police, soldiers and agents from Shin Bet, Israel’s powerful internal security agency, joined the search. Sniffer dogs were deployed and checkpoints were set up in the area around Gilboa.
The military stated that as part of the operation, its troops have been “prepared and deployed” in the occupied West Bank.

The prisoners included 46-year-old Zakariye Zubeidi, a former Fatah party leader in the northern West Bank city of Jenin, and five Palestinian Islamic Jihad who were sentenced to life imprisonment for participating in attacks on Israelis during the early Palestinian uprisings or uprisings member. 2000s.

He said the police launched extensive search operations involving helicopters in towns and villages near the northern part of the West Bank and in areas bordering neighboring Jordan.
al-Omari added that the detainees may have escaped to Jenin, Jordan, or may be hiding in the farmland surrounding the prison.

Dawood Shehab, a spokesperson for the Islamic Jihad, described the breakout as a “heroic act”, which caused a “serious blow” to the Israeli army and Israel’s entire “security organization.”
“This is a long and open struggle… The occupier must understand the lesson well, and our people will never surrender,” Shehab said in a statement issued by the Palestinian news agency Mann.
“[Israel’s] Terrorism will not succeed in undermining the will of our people,” he added.
Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett called the escape “a serious incident” in a statement and said that he would receive regular updates about the search.
According to Addameer, a prisoner rights organization, Israel has held approximately 4,750 Palestinians in dozens of prison facilities, including 42 women, 200 children and 550 administrative detainees.
Although rare, this is not the first time a Palestinian prisoner has escaped from an Israeli prison. In 1995, three Palestinians escaped from the Kfar Yona facility, and in 2014, Shata prison near Gilboa discovered an escape attempt similar to a Monday through a tunnel.
