TAHLEQUAH – SkasdiCon is gearing up for its second year of Indigenous-themed pop culture event by not only opening up space for more vendors, but also opening a call for proposals for panels and workshops.
“Last year, we had about 30 suppliers. We’re growing the supplier space to about 50 or so,” said Callie Chunestudy, program manager for corporate culture programs and events for the Cherokee Nation. “I think all of our panels were very popular last year, but we want to continue to serve people who attend. So we really want to make attendees part of the programming of the experience.”
The plan for the second year of SkasdiCon is to continue to allow vendors to create “their own home-grown pop culture worlds.” Chunestudy added that all suppliers must be citizens of a federally recognized tribe.
“I’d say it’s comic books, or it’s visual art, it’s a game, it’s whatever,” Chunestudy said. “It could be anything that mixes pop art, like Star Wars with something native or … Cherokee Lord of the Rings, you know. , and stuff like that to create original content.”
In addition to adding vendors, Chunestudy said it will also add a youth division to the role-playing competition so they don’t compete with adults. There are also plans to bring in local celebrities, Chunestudy added.
“We haven’t had anyone settled yet. So, I can’t reveal who those people are, but I think people will be excited,” Chunestudy said.
SkasdiCon on Nov. 4 will still be held at Northeastern State University, but the exact location is still being finalized. Chunestudy added that the event will run from 12pm to 7pm this year.
Chunestudy said: “With the expansion of suppliers, we’re really excited about all the new suppliers and really … had a really, really good second year.”
