Skating scene at Circuit X development on Hudayriat Island in Abu Dhabi

Skateboarders have recently come circuit X.

The Adventure Centre opened in November 2020 and is located on Hudayriat Island in Abu Dhabi. It offers a range of activities and challenges spread across four main parks – BMX, Ropes, Skateboard and Splash – spread over 15,000 square meters.

Skateboarding, one of the fastest growing sports in the world, made its Olympic debut last year at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, helping it gain more mainstream attention. Part of Circuit X’s mission is to help grow the sport in the UAE by giving skateboarders a place to go and a place for like-minded people to meet.

Circuit X is also home to the June 19 Summer Skateboard Festival competition, which is open to participants of all ages and skill levels. It is hosted by skateboard coach Jimmy Williams.

“This is our third skateboarding competition, which we started organizing in 2021 with the aim of developing the skateboarding community in Abu Dhabi and the UAE, and showcasing amateur and professional skateboarders at Circuit X,” said General Manager Hadi Fakhoury.

“This Skateboard Festival organizes small competitions held throughout the event for all ages and skill levels, giving us the opportunity to mix beginners and pros.”

The event draws around 40 participants – from children to teens, hobbyists to professionals – who swish around in a shady bowl, showing off their best skills while engaging with the Meet other sports enthusiasts.

“People like this format because it allows everyone to participate and it’s more dynamic than the typical competition format,” Fakhoury said.

“We had around 40 entrants, which is a large number and reflects interest in the sport, especially since there are no big cash prizes, but prizes that recognise the best movement, technique and effort.”

The event offers free snacks and refreshments to contestants and other live entertainment such as DJs and MCs. There are also custom skateboard merchandise from local designers on sale. Even those who are not competing can enjoy every part of the skatepark to the fullest.

“We’re definitely going to have more games after the summer break,” Fakhoury said. “We will be organizing skateboarding and BMX competitions in November and December as we plan to continue to grow and support these extreme sports and their communities.”

The skate park offers a variety of challenges for all skill levels, and in addition to a series of ledges, handrails, quarter pipes and bridges, there are three skate bowls. Professionals and beginners can bring their own skateboard or scooter, or rent one at the park.
