Special Olympics UAE wraps up second training camp ahead of 2023 Berlin Olympics

Abu Dhabi: Special Olympics UAE concluded its second training camp in Al Ain in preparation for the 2023 Special Olympics World Games in Berlin from 17-25 June.

The UAE will compete in 20 different sports and the UAE Special Olympics delegation is one of the largest in the MENA region, comprising 75 athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities and 32 unified partners.

Special Olympics UAE athletes trained in a variety of different sports during the camp, including beach volleyball, volleyball, basketball, athletics, equestrianism, roller skating, table tennis, weightlifting, swimming, badminton, bowling and cycling. Special Olympics held its first training camp earlier this year, and athletes participated in a number of events in 2023 in preparation for the upcoming World Games, including the Yass Triathlon, the 3rd National Sailing Camp , DIBS – Citizens Open Bowling Championships and UAE Swimming Cup.

Special Olympics UAE National Director Talal Al Hashemi said: “We are delighted to see our athletes preparing for the upcoming Special Olympics World Games in Berlin 2023. We are proud of their progress and their determination and commitment to achieve their best goals Proud to represent the UAE, which has the largest participating delegation from the MENA region. We started our preparation and training sessions months ago and continue to provide our athletes with all the support they need to complement their passion and determination aggressiveness.”

In partnership with National Ambulance, Special Olympics UAE has recently held several training sessions under the ‘Safety in Train’ initiative. The initiative provides essential medical and first aid skills to all Special Olympics UAE staff and strengthens the delegation’s health and safety qualifications, making it one of the safest delegations to Special Olympics World Berlin 2023.

UAE Special Olympics athletes have recently successfully participated in several international competitions, such as the training camp of the UAE Women’s United Football Team in Japan. In 2022, the athletes also achieved a number of global victories, including 16 medals at the Malta Invitational 2022 and 16 medals during their participation in the Special Olympics Austria 2022 National Games.
