Sri Lanka gave a huge boost to their qualifying hopes by beating the United Arab Emirates (UAE) by 79 points in the first round of Group A of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia.
After being scored, Sri Lanka led 117-2 after 14 rounds, but were stellarly pulled back by a hat-trick from Karthik Meiyappan to make it 8-152.
In response, the UAE were limited to 73 out of 17.1 overs.
Meiyappan, the 22-year-old Chennai-born leg spinner, befuddled the middle order and quelled any thought of scoring over 180 with his 3-for-19.
Opener Pathum Nissanka sealed the innings with 74 of 60 balls and put his team into the competitive total.
In response, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) were unable to deal with their opponent’s speed bowlers and lost four wickets in just 21 runs in the power play.
Dushmantha Chameera was especially threatening with a 15-for-15 3-pointer in 3.5 possessions, but unfortunately, he retired with an injury. Wanindu Hasaranga was the other top performer as UAE were eliminated with just 73 overs in 17.1 overs, with three points in 8 of 4 overs.
Sri Lanka face the Netherlands on Thursday and they know a win will qualify them for the 2022/2023 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, but they will be without Dushmantha Chameera. The UAE will need a spectacular win and result against Namibia to qualify.
In another Group A match, the Netherlands beat Namiba by five wickets.

Namibia 20 rounds 121-6 (Jan Fleilink 43; Bass de Reid 2-18). Holland 122-5 on 19.3 (Vikram Jit Singh 39; JJ Smith 2-24). Netherlands won by 5 wickets.
