NNA – Japan and the UAE signed an agreement in Abu Dhabi on Saturday for the transfer of defense equipment and technology.
In Tokyo, Japan’s foreign ministry said it was the first such agreement with a country in the Middle East.
Isomata Akio, Ambassador of Japan to the UAE; Major General Mubarak Saeed Ghavan Al Jabri, Assistant Undersecretary for Support and Defense Industries of the UAE Ministry of Defense, signed the agreement.
The agreement establishes a legal framework for the two governments to provide defense equipment and technology transfer for joint research, development and production, as well as enhance security and defense cooperation.
The ministry said the agreement will come into effect after the two governments complete the necessary procedures.
The ministry said the agreement ensures proper control over the transfer of defense equipment and technology, especially with regard to any subsequent transfer to third parties or any additional use.
“The agreement is expected to help strengthen bilateral defense equipment and technology cooperation, maintain and improve the production and technology bases of Japan’s defense industry, thereby contributing to Japan’s security,” the ministry said. –AN
