However, the wait seems to be worth it.

“This town needs entertainment,” Michaelson told nohawk“People want to do something to entertain at night. They don’t want to just sit there and go to the bar.”

In an innovative and simple concept, clients can throw an axe at a dart-like wooden target. That’s it. However, the appeal is original and creative.one Internet search Reveals that throwing axe is a growing trend and may even be hotter than pickle and smash the room.

The cost of one person throwing lanes is $35 per hour. Participants must sign a waiver in case something goes wrong, but that’s unlikely because Michelson and his enthusiastic staff monitor every pitch.

They will even provide an introduction to how to throw. “Hold it like a baseball bat, with the dominant hand on it,” Michaelson said.

There are two types of throws, but like any good athlete, everyone has to figure out their own style. Throwing both hands over your head and forward (don’t flick, but release) is the most popular style. Or like this reporter, a one-handed pitch, like a short-armed baseball field, can also lead to a bullseye.

The place is full of loud music, a mix of 1980s pop, hip-hop, alternative and classic rock. On Tuesday afternoon, shortly after opening, a steady stream of passersby stopped to look inside, many of them surprised that Santa Barbara had a place to throw axes.

Among Tuesday’s customers were Richard and Hopwood, tourists from Fresno who Googled “axe throwing” and found the Santa Barbara business.

“It was the first time we threw an axe,” Richard Wood said. “Five stars, ten stars.”

On Wednesday, he said he and his wife were going to get tattoos. Axe throwing, however, is the highlight of a Santa Barbara vacation.

“It’s very fun and very cool,” he said.

He threw an axe for the first time about three years ago. He is addicted. He said his biggest advice to new axe throwers is, “Don’t think too much.”

“It’s something different and fun,” he said. “It’s a great way to release a lot of stress after a tough day.”

Hours of operation are Monday to Wednesday from 4pm to 10pm. Thursday is college night, open from 4pm to midnight. Students get $5 off. It is open from 2pm to midnight on Friday, noon to midnight on Saturday and noon to 10pm on Sunday.

“But if people keep coming in, I’ll keep it open,” Michaelson said. “Santa Barbara is beautiful. We have beaches, great food, boutiques and artisan goods, but we need more entertainment.”
