Steven Spielberg wins Golden Globe for best director, calls ‘The Fabermans’ a show of ‘courage’

Accepting the Autobiographical Drama Award, Spielberg said, “I’ve been avoiding this story since I was 17. I put a lot of stuff into the way it’s done.”

He continued: “Throughout my career, I’ve told the story in bits and pieces. ‘ET’ has a lot to do with the story. ‘Intimate Encounters’ has a lot to do with the story. But I’ve never had the guts to Tell the story head-on until [‘Fabelmans’ co-writer] Tony Kushner [and I] was working for “Munich” a long time ago, [and he] start telling me all this about [his] Life. We started talking. The conversation runs through “Munich,” through “Lincoln” and “West Side Story.” My wife Kate always said, ‘You have to tell this. During COVID, I don’t know if any of us will have the opportunity to tell any of our stories again in March, April, and May of 2020. “

Spielberg added: “Everything I’ve done so far has prepared me to finally be honest about the fact that being a kid wasn’t easy. In fact, everyone saw me as a success story.” …but until we were brave enough to tell everyone who we were, no one really knew who we were. I spent a lot of time wondering when I could tell this story, and I figured out when I was 74. I said, ‘You better do it now.’ And I’m really, really glad I did.”

This year’s Best Director category is made up entirely of men, with James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Chenert’s Everything, Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis Presley” and Martin McDonagh for “The Banshee of Inisherin.”

The 2023 ceremony marks the return of the Golden Globes, which were boycotted by talent, media and creatives in 2022 — and not televised — after the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (which at the time had none) Black members) and other accountability issues.

“The Fabermans,” a semi-autobiographical tale of a movie-obsessed teen growing up in Arizona and Northern California, was nominated for five categories, including Best Drama and Best Screenplay, as well as M. Shell Williams, who played the mother in Spielberg’s fictional version of the film.
