Strategic partnership between UAE, Brazil on the agenda as Reem Al Hashimy begins official visit

Brasilia [Brazil], 18th June (ANI/WAM): Reem bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation, will lead a high-level UAE delegation to Brazil on 14-15 June 2023 to discuss the UAE-Brazil strategic partnership in various fields. The visit follows President Lula da Silva’s state visit to the UAE on April 15, 2023, his first official visit to the Middle East since his election earlier this year. During his visit, Hashemi met with senior officials, including: Celso Amorim, Chief Advisor to the Brazilian Presidency; Rodrigo Otavio Pacheco, President of the Federal Senate and National Assembly; Vice President and Development, Industry and Commerce Minister Geraldo Alckmin and Environment and Climate Change Minister Marina Silva. The two sides discussed cooperation across key areas, including renewable energy, science and technology, sustainable development, climate action, aviation, space, food safety and agriculture, transportation and logistics. Hashemi welcomed the approval by the Brazilian Congress of the Agreement on Cooperation and Investment Facilitation and the Agreement on Cooperation and Mutual Assistance in Customs Affairs.

In addition, Hashemi also met with Ambassador Maria Laura de Rocha, Secretary General of the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador André Alaña Correa do Lago, Minister of Climate, Energy and Environment, Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs Carlos Duarte, and Middle East Director Sidney Leo Romero. The two sides expressed their joint commitment to strengthen the strategic partnership and further expand the bilateral relationship to new areas of cooperation. The Brazilian Navy has signed a strategic partnership and cooperation agreement with EDGE, one of the world’s leading advanced technology and defense groups, to develop a state-of-the-art long-range anti-ship missile. The agreement was signed at an event attended by Al Hashimy, UAE Ambassador to Brazil Saleh Al Suwaidi, Brazilian Navy dignitaries led by Admiral Jose Augusto Vieira da Cunha de Menezes, and Managing Director and CEO of EDGE Mansour AlMulla in Brazil Maria celebrates Brazilian Navy Day. The partnership underscores the shared ambition of both parties to be at the forefront of innovation and explore export opportunities to key global markets.

In her opening remarks at the UAE-Brazil Business Forum, Al Hashimy praised the growing bilateral relationship – non-oil bilateral trade between the two countries surpassed $4 billion in 2022, a 32% increase from the previous year – and stressed the need to continue to build on the relationship between the two countries. Explore promising business and investment opportunities in Chinese markets and deepen people-to-people ties. Furthermore, discussions during the visit focused on the negotiations on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between the UAE and Mercosur. The two sides also discussed efforts to advance cooperation between the BRICS bloc and the UAE.

In addition, Hashemi also met with the Minister of Energy, Alexandre Silveira, and signed a memorandum of understanding between the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure and the Brazilian Ministry of Mines and Energy on cooperation in the field of renewable energy. The two sides explored areas to enhance trade and investment between the two countries. The conference was attended by various Emirati companies such as Mubadala and the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA), Masdar and DP World. The UAE hosted the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) this year, and the two countries expressed their shared commitment to jointly address the challenge of climate change and build a sustainable future for generations to come. Furthermore, the UAE welcomed the announcement of Brazil’s bid to host COP30 in 2025.

Saleh Al Suwaidi, UAE Ambassador to Brazil, hosted a dinner for Al Hashimy and Minister of Indigenous Peoples Sonia Guajajara, in which Al Hashimy affirmed the UAE’s commitment to the values ​​of tolerance and coexistence and highlighted the importance of harnessing the knowledge and values ​​of indigenous peoples for sustainable development and protect biodiversity. In the spirit of the UAE’s commitment to the advancement of science and technology, Hashemi visited the University of Brasília and announced the UAE’s donation of US$2 million to restore the university’s central library. Hashemi stressed that this donation represents the strength of friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

Al Hashimy also participated in two talks with Roberto Campos Neto, Governor of the Central Bank of Brazil, and Tatiana Rosito, Secretary of International Affairs at the Ministry of Finance, to discuss the UAE’s commitment to strengthening economic ties with like-minded partners. Additionally, Al Hashimy gave a lecture on UAE foreign policy at the Rio Branco Academy, Brazil’s Diplomatic Academy. During his exchanges with Brazilian diplomats and academics, His Excellency Hashemi highlighted the UAE’s foreign policy and its enthusiasm to explore opportunities for cooperation between the UAE and Brazil on issues of mutual concern.
