Sweden’s new government on Tuesday named a 26-year-old climate minister, the youngest person to serve as the country’s teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg.
The nomination was among the cabinet members presented by newly elected prime minister Ulf Kristersson, who leads a right-wing coalition that is shored up by the far-right Sweden Democrats.
Romina Pourmokhtari, 26, who has been the head of the Liberal al-Shabaab until now, is not well known for her political profile.
The young minister has been an outspoken critic of Christerson’s moves in the past to align his party more closely with the Sweden Democrats (SD).
“Ulf Kristersson without SD – absolutely. Ulf Kristersson with SD – no thanks,” she wrote in a 2020 post to Twitter.
Born into a family of Iranian descent on the outskirts of Stockholm, the young woman inherited a combination of climate and environment and broke the previous record of being the youngest minister at 27.
Sweden is also home to teenage climate activist Thunberg, who has launched a massive global campaign of millions of young people that has sparked a debate about the dangers of climate change.
Sweden’s coalition government was announced on Friday after Christerson struck a deal with his partners and the nationalist and anti-immigration Sweden Democrats, who pledged to support the government in exchange for policy commitments, particularly on immigration and crime policy commitments.
In introducing the cabinet, Christerson also announced the creation of a new ministerial post for “civil defence” as the country faces tensions with Russia.
The Sweden Democrats were the big winners in the election, becoming the second-largest party after the Social Democrats, which have dominated Swedish politics since the 1930s.
The Sweden Democrats’ significant influence on the four-party deal has sparked tensions within the Liberal Party, whose support is also crucial to Christerson’s survival.
