Al Ain International Airport Renamed Tahnoun International Airport

Al Ain International Airport has officially been renamed Tahnoun International Airport following a directive from UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Sunday, October 11, 2026. The new name took effect immediately, according to the Abu Dhabi Media Office.

The decision honours the late Sheikh Tahnoun bin Mohammed Al Nahyan and recognises his decades of service to the UAE. The announcement highlights the country’s commitment to honouring the leaders whose contributions helped shape its development.

Located around 18 kilometres northwest of Al Ain city, Tahnoun International Airport is Abu Dhabi emirate’s second international airport. It opened on March 31, 1994, and serves passengers, businesses and the wider Al Ain region.

Sheikh Tahnoun bin Mohammed Al Nahyan served as the Ruler’s Representative in the Eastern Region of Abu Dhabi from the UAE’s early years until his death on May 1, 2024.

He also held senior government responsibilities, including serving as chairman of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC). His work played an important role in the development of Al Ain. The renaming comes as Abu Dhabi continues to develop the airport’s role in regional aviation and logistics.

In September 2025, officials reviewed a five-year development plan covering infrastructure upgrades, improved passenger facilities and measures to attract more airlines. The plan also aims to strengthen cargo operations and investment opportunities in the surrounding area.

The airport’s development could support Al Ain’s connectivity, tourism and business activity as the region grows. For passengers, the announcement confirms the airport’s new official name.

Travellers should check their airline’s booking details and official airport communications for any updated naming information before departure. The decision adds another prominent UAE transport landmark to the list of national institutions named in recognition of the country’s leadership and history.
