José at Pizarro brings Severier style to Abu Dhabi’s culinary scene…
It’s an early contender, but with tapas bar José by Pizarro opening in March at the Conrad at the Etihad Towers in Abu Dhabi, it could be the most exciting capital city food we’ll hear about in 2023 news.
Authentic Iberian cuisine is relatively underrepresented in Abu Dhabi, given its worldwide reputation for its veritable culinary delights. José Pizarro’s new restaurant aims to cap off this opulent era. Mains power from Spain will arrive on the plane shortly.
Casa Conrad
José by Pizarro will open to the public on March 17th, operating a six-day service schedule (Tuesday to Saturday, 5pm to 11:30pm), and Sundays, 3pm to 10:30pm.
José Pizarro, hailed as the “Godfather of Spanish gastronomy”, made an offer that we, discerning Abu Dhabi diners, would be unwise to say no to. The José Pizarro Group runs a string of highly regarded restaurants across Europe, serving (quite fittingly, Abu Dhabi’s recent Michelin acquisition) Bib Gourmand-recognized European cuisine.
There is a powerful synergy between Spanish and Arabic food, not least because of shared traditional cues. Arab settlers occupied large swaths of the Iberian mainland as early as the eighth century, with an impact on language, place names, architecture and food – one that can still be poetically observed today.
What is tapas if not a mezze with a sultry Spanish accent?
what’s on the menu
You’ll be able to share (or not, no one will tell) signature José small plates like spicy chicken croquettes, prawn fritters, and potato tacos. Unconfirmed, but we’re all praying for some form of top pub snack item – huevos rotos (cracked eggs).
We were told we could expect larger sharing plates, mainly Spanish red tuna tartare, traditional lamb meatballs and free range chicken paella. Of course, we’d say goodbye without trying José’s famously decadent desserts.
The José by Pizarro dessert selection will include chocolate jars with salt and olive oil, homemade Spanish almond pie with figs and custard, and a selection of cheeses with fruit and chutney.
José Pizarro, founder of José by Pizarro, said: “I have always wanted to open a restaurant outside of Europe and launching José by Pizarro is a dream come true. So exciting.”
“Abu Dhabi is a place passionate about food, art and culture, and Tower Conrad at Etihad Abu Dhabi is the city’s most iconic hotel and one of the UAE’s leading culinary destinations. Together, I think we are a perfect match. I look forward to introducing the world to the incredible flavors, spices and aromas of Spanish cuisine, and welcome you all to our friendly and vibrant new home in Abu Dhabi very soon.”
