#Roommates, the highly anticipated film adaptation of the Tony Award-winning musical The Purple just got a major star in the form of a Golden Globe winner Taraji P.HansonAccording to recent reports, Taraji P. Henson will play the role of “Sugar Avery” in the upcoming film “The Color Purple,” directed by Blitz Bazawule.
Taraji P. Henson, who plays “Miss Hannigan,” reportedly sheds her delightful role in the recent NBC live adaptation of “Annie!” go back to the big screen to show her vocals again. Margaret Avery, who originally played the role of Taraji P. Henson in the 1985 Oscar-nominated film, is now poised to star in the upcoming musical version, @Variety reports The role of “Shug Avery” in the film adaptation of The Color Purple. Back in August, news broke that HER would make his feature film debut as “Squeak” on the project. The coveted roles of “Ciri,” “Mr.” and “Sophia” have yet to be decided.
The Warner Bros. film, set to hit theaters on December 20, 2023, will be directed by Blitz Bazawule, best known for Beyonce’s “Black Is King” and OWN Network’s “Cherish the Day.” Additionally, Corey Hawkins (best known for playing Dr. Dre in “Compton”) will play the role of “Harpo” in the Broadway musical adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Alice Walker.
Those who starred and collaborated in the 1985 film will also be present. Oprah Winfrey (her film debut “Sofia”) will be producing through her Harpo Films and the film’s original director, Steven Spielberg, through his own Amblin Entertainment.
Meanwhile, Quincy Jones, who composed the original film’s score and produced the Broadway musical, will also produce the new adaptation, and will join Alice Walker, one of the film’s multiple executive producers.
