With a few weeks left in the show season on the ATP Tour, Taylor Fritz has won a big match this past week. The ninth-ranked American beat Hurkacz in the quarterfinals and Norrie in the semifinals before beating Medvedev 7-6, 7-6 for the title.
“The last time we played, he won,” Fritz said, reflecting on his 7-6(1), 6-3 loss to Medvedev at the Cincinnati Masters this summer. “He told me I was the better player in the first set and this time it was a little bit the opposite. It was a very tough game. He was in control; he had all his chances. Every time he had a break I played really well all the time and always figured out what I needed. Then I played well in the tiebreaker and the big score so I was able to take it away from him.
“Whenever I get a win like this, I’m very happy because I play really well in the crunch time,” added the 25-year-old, who opened the scoring in 1 hour and 50 minutes in a break-free match.
