Disney’s live-action remake of its 1989 animated classic easily beat the competition, bringing in $95.5 million across 4,320 screens in North America, according to studio estimates Sunday.
Disney estimates the film, which stars Halle Belle as the titular mermaid Ariel and Melissa McCarthy as sea witch nemesis Ursula, will make $117.5 million by the end of the holiday season. It ranks as the fifth-biggest Memorial Day weekend opening ever.
It displaces “Fast X” from the top spot. The 10th installment in the “Fast and Furious” franchise starring Vin Diesel has trailed the franchise’s most recent entry, bringing in $23 million domestically, compared with Universal’s two-week total of 1.08 One hundred million U.S. dollars.
In its fourth weekend, Disney and Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” placed third in North America with an estimated gross of $20 million. It has now made $299 million domestically.

U.S. and Canadian theater ticket sales are expected Friday through Sunday, according to Comscore. Final domestic data will be released on Monday.
