The women at the center of Harvey Weinstein’s LA rape trial

[ad_1]

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Prosecutors are calling 44 witnesses in the indictment against Harvey Weinstein, but the jury’s decision in the Los Angeles trial will depend largely on the testimony of four people: Women, known by all as “doe-no-ones” in court.

Four other women also testified as part of prosecutors’ attempt to establish a pattern of sexual assault by the former movie mogul, who has pleaded not guilty. The AP will not name people who say they have been sexually abused unless they have come forward publicly or agreed to be named through their attorneys, like the women mentioned or partially named here.

Here are the eight women and their stories as the jury deliberates after a month-long trial:

Jane does

Anonymous 1:

The Russian-born, Italian-based model and actress was the trial’s first witness. She testified that in February 2013, while attending an Italian film festival in Los Angeles, Weinstein came to her hotel room uninvited and raped her. She said the attack resulted in mental anguish and alcoholism.

“I was destroying myself,” she testified, fighting back tears. “I feel so guilty. Most of all because I opened that door.”

Weinstein’s lawyers argued there was no convincing evidence that he had checked into the hotel.

Lauren Young:

Young, known in court as Jane Doe 2, was the only Weinstein accuser to tell her story at trials in Los Angeles and New York, where he was sentenced to 23 years in prison. Young, a model who later wanted to pursue acting and screenwriting, claims that during a meeting with Weinstein about the script, he trapped her in a Beverly Hills hotel bathroom and groped her in front of her as she became paralyzed with fear and masturbating. It was the day after the alleged rape of Jane Doe 1 in 2013.

“I’m afraid of Harvey Weinstein — he’s going to hurt me, or send someone to hurt me, or ruin my career, or make a mess of my life,” Yang testified.

Weinstein’s attorneys have denied that the encounter occurred and said there is no evidence she was forced to remain in the room.

Anonymous 3:

Weinstein hired her to give him massages in May 2010, and she, like Young, testified that Weinstein trapped her in a hotel bathroom, groping and masturbating in front of her. She expressed shame and disgust that she later agreed to see Weinstein again and study him, a common thread among several witnesses that the defense focused on during cross-examination.

“That’s one of the reasons I don’t want to come forward,” she said, “because it’s embarrassing.”

Jennifer Siebel Newsom:

The most anticipated witness testimony in the trial was also the most high-profile. Siebel Newsom, a documentary filmmaker and wife of California Gov. Gavin Newsom, known in court as Doe 4, accused Wayne of September 2005 Stein’s intensely emotional account of a rape that took place at a Beverly Hills hotel was supposed to be a meeting about her pursuit of an acting career. She testified at times close to crying as the audience stunned.

“He knew it wasn’t normal!” she exclaimed as she described the attack. “He knows it’s not consent!”

Weinstein’s lawyers said it was consensual sex, which she later renamed rape, citing friendly emails and a meeting in the ensuing years.

other accusers

Kelly Seiferd:

Her story spans 17 years: Seiferd testified that Weinstein sexually assaulted her in a hotel room during the Toronto Film Festival in 1991, when she was an aspiring actress, and then when she starred in the same film She then sexually assaulted her again when she confronted him at the same hotel on Sunday. In 2008, Weinstein’s lawyers said her actions after each alleged assault, including accepting an audition invitation for the first time and accepting a party invitation for the second time, were not in evidence.

Ambra Battilana Guitierrez:

Gutierrez, an Italian and Filipino model, reported to authorities in 2015 that Weinstein groped her breasts at a conference in New York. Two years later, she was a major media figure amid the #MeToo bombing, when The New Yorker reported that Weinstein had paid her $1 million to keep her mouth shut. Prosecutors declined to charge Weinstein, a decision that has since sparked criticism and official scrutiny. Gutierrez testified about the meeting and its aftermath, and played for a Los Angeles jury the Weinstein recordings she secretly made at the request of New York police. Weinstein’s lawyers argued her allegations did not amount to sexual assault.

Natasia Malser:

Norwegian model Malthe said in testimony echoing Jane Doe 1’s story that Weinstein showed up uninvited at the door of her London hotel room after the 2008 Baftas and raped her. As they have done with other plaintiffs, Weinstein’s attorneys argue that her story has changed from previous accounts, further contact with Weinstein after the incident, and what they said about consent Mixed signals mean no sexual assault.

Ashley Matto:

A 21-year-old dancer in Weinstein’s 2004 film Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights said Weinstein lured her from the set to his hotel room in Puerto Rico in 2003 and pinned her down and masturbating on her. Weinstein’s attorney said it should have been clear Weinstein had sexual intentions and she could have walked away. She said that was impossible because she was held down by Weinstein, who was much older than her, and believed his assistants were outside to prevent her from leaving. That being said, her fear of him kept her where she was.
