During the final “Ozark” panel, the show creators and cast members finally brought some clarity to the show’s final minutes and the demise of fan-favorite characters.

During a Q&A panel in Hollywood hosted by Netflix on Friday, Emmy-nominated creator Bill Dubuque revealed his SAG-nominated cast members, Jason Bateman and julia garnerExactly how and why the series ended with the unexpected death of two people in the final scene.
Dubuque explained that finalizing the final 14 episodes brought a great deal of creative conflict, as he understood the need to stick to the thematic intent of exploring the Byrdes’ motivations for “building the myth,” and how they ultimately “created” the curse. “
Regarding the last two deaths of the series, first of Ruth Langmore (Julia Garner) and then of Mel Sattem (Adam Rothenberg), Bateman explains, “Byrdes had to pay some sort of bill.” In Byrdes (Bateman, Laura Lynn) After taking responsibility for the death of their partner Ruth, the couple watched as their teenage son Jonah (Skylar Gaertner) killed private eye Mel Satem.
Dubuque added, “It would be wrong if there were no consequences.” Bateman added that the finale provided a “bittersweet” ending that finally allowed viewers to clearly answer the question, “The Byrd family Will he get away with it?”
While “they got away with it,” the Birds have received karmic consequences, Bateman said. Bateman clarifies that the Birds must confront “their son has become a murderer” and how Jonah has “the scarlet letter.” While the family was free, the Byrdes ended up with blood on their hands.
The final shot of the series sparked debate over whether Jonah worked with a private eye to kill his parents. Dubuque clarified that Jonah’s murder of a law enforcement officer was actually a final punishment for the Byrds and a cursed bondage for the Byrds.
Dubuque explained that while the final shot cut to black with no visual indication of who was shot, he was still very surprised to hear that the audience thought the final shot was ambiguously about Jonah shooting his parents and not Mel.
“Anyone can think all they want, in my opinion, no doubt, but in my opinion, he absolutely shot Mel, and Mel is dead. That’s it,” Dubuque said. “I just don’t want to see it. It’s over. If you shot him, your blood and your guts are in…but the show is over. He did it.”
Mel’s death was a debate among viewers, while Ruth’s was the creator’s own. Dubuque, who struggled with how to end the story of the series’ “favorite character,” revealed that he “didn’t sleep for a week or two” and “would wake up at four in the morning.” Dubuque ultimately concluded that the shocking death “was the right decision for the show,” though it was difficult for the cast, crew and audience to admit it.
“Ruth’s character is almost stronger when she’s dead than when she left somewhere,” Dubuque said. Favorite character — you just try to do it justice.”
Garner added that she thought her character’s fate was “the best decision Chris could have made.” clarified in the second part of the fourth season, “[Ruth] already dead. Her soul is dead, her body is here, but in the last four episodes, she’s dead. “
Dubuque reveals why a scene in the finale features all of Ruth’s uncles and a dead Longmore. Dubuque said he gave the audience space to recognize “what it’s like to know she’s going to die.” Explaining how he wanted viewers to notice “emotionally rather than intellectually” that it would be better for Ruth to be dead, since she ends up surrounded by her dead family.
“Ozark” is a hit on Netflix as it enters its final season.the series hit 78.4 million watch hours premiere week after the final seven episodes were released.
