Thuraya and eSAT Global Announce Satellite IoT Breakthrough

[ad_1]

Thuraya and eSAT Global successfully completed an over-the-air demonstration of a low-latency, direct-to-satellite IoT messaging system by transmitting low-power IoT messages over Thuraya’s satellite network (Thuraya-2 Satellite T2).

This is a key breakthrough in the ongoing effort to create an enabling framework for next-generation Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity.

The milestone is the first of several that Yahsat expects to achieve with its investment in eSAT Global and Thuraya’s agreement with the company to develop a next-generation IoT platform.

320 characters

eSAT is capable of sending and receiving messages up to 320 characters long via T2 satellites, with less transmission power (< 200 microwatts) than a typical car key fob. This means that minimal power is required to transmit messages over long distances. The demo showed stable operation in a range of configurations, including one with an antenna the size of a fingernail.

Other technologies, such as Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT), consume more satellite transmission power and bandwidth to provide similar SMS and messaging services. The reduced levels of power and bandwidth consumption allow GEO-MSS satellite operators to adjust the cost per message compared to other satellite-based messaging technologies, resulting in substantial savings for their customers.

Another benefit of this approach is that a very large number of endpoint terminals can be served simultaneously within Thuraya’s coverage area.

The successful demonstration provides a strong boost to Thuraya and eSAT’s efforts to efficiently utilize existing GEO-MSS satellite resources, opening up a new avenue of revenue-generating opportunities for satellite operators in the IoT and SMS markets.

The fast-growing IoT sector

Ali Al Hashemi, CEO of Yahsat Group, said: “This demonstration by Thuraya and eSAT Global underscores our shared commitment to driving the fast-growing IoT industry. leading position) and the business activities of IoT solution providers. We have just invested in eSAT Global in October 2022 and we are pleased with the pace of development. In our existing M2M/ The new capabilities implemented in the IoT ecosystem will allow us to offer Thuraya’s customers even more compelling IoT solutions.”

Rick Somerton, eSAT Global CEO, said: “Achieving this milestone is a critical step towards the launch of a mass-market commercial service later this year. Great interest. Our projected sales pipeline already exceeds $100 million. Within two years of starting operations, we expect to double the number of IoT devices currently connected to satellites globally.” — trade arab news agency
