Tokyo is currently in a state of virus emergency, and the number of infections has surged.
Organizers said on Saturday that the Tokyo Olympics had registered the first case of Covid-19 in the Olympic Village six days before the opening of the Olympics.
“There is a person in the village. This is the first case reported in the village during the screening test,” Masa Takaya, a spokesperson for the Tokyo Organizing Committee, said at a press conference.
Meanwhile, local officials said on Thursday that at least eight employees of a Japanese hotel where the Brazilian Olympic Judo team is located have tested positive for the coronavirus.
Health and sports officials in Hamamatsu City, western Tokyo, said that a judo delegation of about 30 members had been screened for the virus before arriving there on Saturday.
They said that none of the infected people had contact with athletes.
Tokyo is currently in a state of virus emergency, and the number of infections has surged. The city recorded 1,149 cases on Wednesday, the highest number since January.
Several areas around the capital are subject to looser virus restrictions.
Olympic participants will be subject to strict virus regulations and stay away from the Japanese public to a large extent.
