ABC World News tonight with David Muir However, during the week of August 1, the average total audience was over 7.435 million, with adults aged 25-54 averaging 1.28 million. The 7.435 million figure means World News Tonight is again the most-watched U.S. TV show of the week (excluding sports and syndication). In addition, ABC’s nightly newscast beat NBC and CBS’s 192 in average viewership over the past 193 weeks, and 121 over the past 123 weeks among adults aged 25-54.
Compared to the previous week (July 25), World News Tonight saw a -2% drop in total viewers and a -3% drop in presentations for adults aged 25-54. World News Tonight’s Total Viewer Holds Steady, Declines -5% Among Adults 25-54 Beginning with a comparable week in 2021 (August 2).
NBC Nightly News Lester Holt The linear network’s average total viewership was 6.02 million, down -3% from the previous week, while 927,000 adults aged 25-54 were down -3% from the previous week. The 6.02 million figure is the third-highest among U.S. television programs, excluding specials, sports, and syndication. “Nightly News” saw the biggest year-over-year decline of the three evening newscasts, with a -13% overall audience and -35% for adults aged 25-54. This poor trend isn’t particularly surprising, considering that a year ago it happened to be Week 2 of NBC’s postponed 2020 Summer Olympics. During NBC Olympics Week, adults aged 25-54 watched more evening news than usual, which may explain the difference between the year-over-year loss of total viewers (older viewers) and the year-over-year loss of adults aged 25-54.
On a more positive note, across the digital space, Nightly News had its best week since April, with 1,220 video views on and off the web platform, according to Adobe Analytics and partner portals. 10,000 times; YouTube Analytics Portal.
Additionally, on Thursday, August 4th, NBC Nightly was renamed “NBC Nitely News” due to the NFL preseason football game. The rebranded broadcast has been removed from the seasonal and weekly averages, meaning Nielsen’s ratings for NBC Nightly News for the week of Aug. 1 are based on four days, not five.
CBS Evening News Nora O’Donnell The first week of August averaged 4.5 million viewers and 751,000 adults aged 25-54. In terms of total viewers, that’s -3% – flat for adults aged 25-54 compared to the previous week. Compared to the same period in 2021, The Evening News saw a -6% decline in total viewers and a -6% decline in adults aged 25-54.
On Friday, August 5, CBS Evening News was renamed “CBS Evening News.” Renamed TV shows are not included in the weekly and season averages, and newscast ratings for the week of Aug. 1 are based on just four days, not five.
